On Wednesday, May 7, Chrysalis played the second slot of the night at the Rock Shop in San Jose. Chrysalis is a heavy metal band from Barstow, California. On this night, Chrysalis is Billy Norris (drums), Gabe Gallejo (guitar/ backing vocals), Yessi Burton (guitar/ vocals) and Jared Sturgis (bass).

Chrysalis opens the show with their drum pummeling and stimulating “Sounds of the Playground”. The stage of the Rock Shop is illuminated with strobe lights in addition to green and red lights that light up the members of Chrysalis as they play on stage. After a quick introduction, Chrysalis rips into the pounding and punishing “Thoughts Behind”. The tune gets the crowd moving. After an applause from the crowd, frontman Yessi Burton tells the crowd that the next song is a special song for the group and that they had just shot a video for it. The song is the moving and melodic “Instant Silence”. Next up they play the steady, gripping instrumental based “Tumbula” that leads straight into the dynamic rock song “Saturn Waits”. The crowd gets involved and starts clapping in rhythm to the beat of “Saturn Waits”. Chrysalis end the show with the fast and fierce tune “My Forsaken”.

The meshing of lights with the tempo and rhythm of the music as well as frontman Yessi Burton’s banter with the crowd in a robotic voice makes Chrysalis’s live show an entertaining and substantial experience. Chrysalis’s music ranges from heavy metal to hard and alternative rock as well as hardcore and even elements of synth. With an album under their belt and a new one that came out this year, Chrysalis have a bright future ahead. They are currently on tour in support of their newest album “Focus On The Center”.
