With the success of the superhero genre more and more variations are coming out all the time. It’s a tricky thing trying to take original content and make an original successful film. Some have nailed it like Super, but more than not have fallen short. The latest attempt is Chronicle using the found footage method, but does it work or is it just another attempt at an already somewhat annoying genre?
Chronicle follows three high school students who develop powers after an incredible discovery. As the learn to use these new powers things start spinning out of control and the darker sides begin to take over. This is one of the better uses for the found footage style, although at the same time it isn’t all that necessary for this particular story. Who knows if it would have come across the same way if shot as a normal film, but some aspects of the found footage gave the film a clever look and feel? The effects used here are some of the best seen in this genre. They are all believable and work to help build the story. Where this films works the most is the story itself. This takes a more realistic look at what would really happen if you gave teenagers powers. Instead of the responsibility, they act like teenagers and use them to goof around and harass people. Much like real life, each individual’s personal life has a direct effect on how and what they decide to do with the film. This film has a little bit of everything needed to make a great superhero film but takes a more realistic approach creating a truly great film.
This is easily the best found footage film thus far and seems to make the best most believable use for it. Great effects, great acting, great story, and some great depth, this is one of the best original superhero films to come along in some time. If you’re a fan of the superhero or found footage genre, then this movie is for you.
