ChocoHigos takes an upscale spin on the Raisinet (Photos)

On a recent trip to Wegman's in Landover I swore I would only go in to get some school snacks and juice boxes for my son. Of course I got side tracked and picked up a few things for myself. In addition to getting side tracked by random items in the aisles, I am always drawn to the kiosks offering free samples. As I enjoy a sample of some gruyere I noticed they were pushing figs which are a great accompaniment to cheeses. Of all the fig flavored offerings I of course was immediate drawn to the hand-dipped dark chocolate figs, oh my!

I love a good fig so I had to give it a try... even at $7.99 for a 4.9 oz container. Before opening and enjoying the contents I had to examine the packaging to get any idea of what exactly went into making the item as well as where I can get more or similar items if it was good. The ChocoHigos are handmade by Paiarrop S.L. in Valencia, Spain and imported by Forever Cheese. It is a simple preparation of drying some Spanish pajarero figs and dipping them in Paiarrop's blend of dark chocolate with no additives or preservatives - just simple, clean natural yumminess.

Once I broke open the packaging and took a bite I was in heaven. There is something to be said for using simple ingredients and allowing them to shine. Semi-sweet dark chocolate encases the chewy sweet, slightly tart earthy fig combining to create an absolutely wonderful bite.

After consuming two or three or seven of the figs I realized it reminded me of a childhood favorite - the Raisinet. While grapes and figs are obviously different their flavors are reminiscent of each other. The use of no additives or artificial flavoring really invoked a more sophisticated version of the Raisinet.

If you are at home with a significant other or some friends and want to have some upscale snacks for movie night get yourself so high quality popcorn and grab some ChocoHigos. I'd suggest finely chopping a few and tossing them with the popcorn for what I imagine would be a great snack. Or if you're like me and prefer to keep certain things to yourself get your favorite red wine, kick back and enjoy in moderation.
