Donald Glover, better known as Childish Gambino in the rap community, brought The Deep Web tour to The Rave in Milwaukee on March 21. The experimental artist's complex opus, "Because the Internet," has drawn critical praise and easily sold out the Eagles Ballroom.
While the comedian-actor found success on NBC's "Community," he chose to scale back his role to push his musical career. The show began at 8 p.m. with an hour-long DJ set before Glover took the stage promptly at 9 o'clock. A massive digital screen filled the stage backdrop and was littered with interactive scribbles and tweets while fans waited for the rising star to take the stage. Soon, chants of "Donald" filled the ballroom and the backdrop appeared to reboot, indicating that Childish Gambino's presence was imminent.
His live show translates the conceptual nature of "Internet" to the stage. Performing with a mix of multicolored lights and subtle images projected onto the backdrop, Glover hit the throng of mostly college students with a mix of songs that were exclusive to the new album. While the album is conceptual, Glover didn't follow the tracklist in order but chose to jump back and forth as the show played out.
The second portion of his set reached back to his debut album, "Camp." Glover showed his skills with a barrage of tunes that blurred together into tightly-knit medley before he ended the evening with a display of freestyle rap to close the show.
