Chicken Macaroni and Cheese, located at 7025 Prospect, has a lot in common with those numerous diners found on the Eastern seaboard. One, it serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Two, customers can eat at a table, booth or counter. Three, the menu is comprised mainly of classic, home-style comfort food.
But the similarities end there. Most of those old - fashioned diners have stainless steel exteriors and lots of checkerboard white and black tiles on the interior. Chicken Macaroni and Cheese has a beige ceramic tile floor, earth tone tiled walls and hanging light fixtures with beige fabric drum shades. The banquet style chairs are upholstered with white vinyl as well as the booths. The front entrance area and dining room are open and bright with light. Also, Chicken Macaroni and Cheese started out serving take out before moving to this larger building with a dining room.
The menu lists traditional menu items such as waffles, omelets, fried chicken, pork chops and burgers. But you can also order fried rice and egg rolls. Or you can choose from several burger combos. But there are also extraordinary items such as the WaffleWich - bacon or sausage and an egg are sandwiched between two waffles. There's also a sandwich that literally represents the name of the restaurant. Several fried chicken "fingerz" rest on a hoagie bun. Then, several large scoops of macaroni and cheese are poured on top of the fingerz. The resulting Chick-A-Roni is enough food for two people...or, for the self-indulgent, lunch the following day. Portion sizes for menu items tend to be very generous.
Their macaroni and cheese is distinctive in texture and flavor. Instead of gooey and cheesy, it's actually noodles in more of an Alfredo sauce - a very flavorful Alfredo sauce. Everything on the menu is flavorful. The fried chicken is far from boring. It's so herb seasoned and crunchy, you will be trying to catch every crumb of all of that crisp coating. The coating on the chicken "fingerz" is just as flavorful but it's more of a breading. There's also a fried tilapia with a similar coating. And it's interior was moist and juicy. The same is true of the fried chicken.
Dinner combos are accompanied by two sides, bread or biscuit, and a drink. Choices of sides include items such as cabbage, green beans, baked beans, yams or French fries. Drink choices are tea, lemonade and homemade fruit punch. Be warned - these are Southern style beverages. The tea is not just sweet tea - it's SWEET tea. It may actually remind you of an Arnold Palmer - the flavor of tea is very prominent along with a second note of sweet lemon flavor.
Chicken Macaroni and Cheese is a casual restaurant. Orders are placed at the counter for take out or dine in. They do a brisk take out business. But if you choose to dine in, the service is very attentive. Since this is a family business, the owners Dyamund Shields and Dyamund Shields Jr. rely on the staff and family members to serve drinks, meals and bus tables. They are friendly and accommodating. If you visit often, the staff may even remember you...and your taste buds.
The restaurant is open 7 days a week from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. And they recently obtained a liquor license. Parking is available in front of the restaurant and a side parking lot. In terms of access, there's a short cement ramp from street level up to the front door.
