Usually when one hears Captain Curt’s BBQ, innovation of BBQ sauce immediately comes to mind, as the 32-plus year mainstay has long innovated well over 20 sauce flavors, with 10 currently available on the menu. On Friday, April 11, Captain Curt’s BBQ – located at 8206 S. Cottage Grove Avenue, Chicago, IL – played host to Discovery Entertainment Series’ weekly kick-off performances, which included singing and comedy. Future shows scheduled will include dance, rapping and poetry reading.

Local entertainer, talent producer, comedian and Discovery Entertainment Series and Discovery Music Series founder Kevin Fuller emceed last Friday’s kick-off performances, while using windows of opportunity to target unsuspecting audience members and performers with his comic material.

Country-style singer Randrea engaged the audience and diner’s with his rousing performance of “I’m Still in Love with You,” while encouraging them to join him in a line dance. The evening’s performance continually upgraded, especially with a bluesy guitar solo from south suburban music and illustration wunderkind Spike Rebel, a noted music producer and branding jingle-maker.

Singer and keyboardist Tim Jackson brought the sexy with a number called "Ooh", a track that's set for release this summer. Jackson’s swag and smooth vocals are definitely reminiscent of John Legend fame.

Comedy routines rounded out the night between emcee Kevin Fuller and local comedian Clifton Collins, but it didn’t stop there. The crowd was treated to an appearance by the legendary Gordon Keith – original founder of Indiana-based Steeltown Records and who also truly discovered the Jackson 5. Mr. Keith sang “Call On Him”—one of his own classics – while harmonizing beautifully with supporting vocals by rhythm and blues songstress Gloria “Glow” Walker-Oliver and singer, musician and songwriter of Earth, Wind and Fire fame, Hank Martin.

Glow wowed the crowd with an acapella rendition of “My Funny Valentine” earlier in the showcase.

Discovery Entertainment Series performances will be held every Friday at 7:00 p.m. from Friday, April 11 to Friday May 23 at Captain Curt’s BBQ, located at 8206 S. Cottage Grove Avenue, Chicago, IL 60619. Call 773-747-7017 or visit www.facebook.com/HOST1Entertainment for more information.
