Filling the void of vocalist Scott Weiland with Linkin Park's Chester Bennington, the Stone Temple Pilots performed at House of Blues in Atlantic City on September 7. While replacement vocalists will always generate a strong backlash from the diehard fans, many were excited to see three of the four original members on the road again. Filter opened the show with a brief set to get the evening started.
The on-again, off-again relationship between Weiland and the other members of STP has generated much publicity. After the former frontman decided to take a solo tour [review] on the road, the other members decided to move forward after Bennington agreed to handle lead vocal duty. With new music on the horizon and litigation pending from both sides, the future as "Stone Temple Pilots" remains clouded for the two sides. What remains clear, after seeing the current incarnation of STP perform live, is that they have a bright future with Bennington on vocals.
A new single, "Out of Time," has the trademark sound of the DeLeo brothers, oozing with Robert's bass grooves and Dean's signature riffs. The tight musicianship that exists amongst the original members was obvious from the opening notes of "Down" to begin the show. An energetic Bennington plowed through classic STP material with ease, sharing smiles with both DeLeo brothers throughout the night.
The difference between Weiland's solo tour and Stone Temple Pilots with Chester Bennington is like night and day. Both perform similar material, anchored by 90-minutes of STP's greatest hits. Weiland brought his charismatic persona that was wrought with slurred anecdotes and more of a jam-band feeling as they stumbled through songs; whereas STP were energetic and musically spot on Saturday night.
Other artists have moved on with similar issues. Queensryche are currently battling for rights to their name and Axl Rose has never relinquished the Guns 'n Roses moniker. Both Alice in Chains and Sublime have been quite successful transcending the aura of their late, iconic frontmen.
