James Silva and Ska Studios definitely have their own style of game. I like to compare it to the style that you expect from Behemoth and their games. When you see a game developed by Ska Studios you know it’s a game developed by Ska Studios. Charlie Murder is without a doubt a game that could only come from the folks at Ska Studios. It is insane.
Charlie Murder is a fun co-op brawler that keeps with the insanity of action and being different that I’ve come to expect from Silva. You are out on a quest to save Charlie’s girlfriend, Skelekitten, from his musical rival. The characters are very much punk rock and the action is simple. Each of the five-member band that you can choose from has their own distinctive look and their own attack style that sort of fits their role. For instance Charlie, the lead vocalist, has a screen attack and buff spells on the mic. Like I said, it’s very much a Ska Studios game.
What I will say though is that there is a lot of meat packed into Charlie Murder. It’s not just a game in which you hit the attack button throughout. Charlie Murder has some very cool options that it provides to the player. If you’re a fan of RPGs, then you’ll be happy to know there is a bit of RPG depth to the game. You can outfit your character and improve your attributes as well. Trust me, there is a lot that you can do to your character that will make a difference with how you play.
I really enjoyed the way that you accessed additional options for the character. Your cell phone would get an email and you simply check it and see what’s happening. Each piece of gear or item you get is important to your character. They can either make you weaker or stronger. I didn’t expect to see this much depth in Charlie Murder but I was happy to have it. And I was even happier that the controls were done in a very friendly way. It didn’t feel cumbersome at all to change clothes or level my attributes up. It was pretty easy.
Most of you will enjoy the fact that it’s co-op. And when you get a few friends playing alongside you, the fun increases tremendously. You can unlock a variety of team-up moves that bring some kick ass action to dispatching the enemies. Don’t worry because the enemies aren’t that tough to deal with alone but it just adds more fun in co-op. You can also engage in some co-op on Xbox Live.
Charlie Murder is insane and I don’t want it to be any other way. Most of the action in the game can be beat with manic presses of the X button and that may turn some off. Others who want to enjoy a game and all its little details, will get a good experience with Charlie Murder. There a number of side Bosses, hidden characters and areas that are to be found which gives the game a lot of worth.
