Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl

A poor boy and an eccentric chocolatier could only lead to high adventure in the case of Charlie and Chocolate Factory (1964) by Roald Dahl.

The poor boy is Charlie Bucket, who lives with his parents and four bedridden grandparents in a tiny house, where they barely make ends meet. The eccentric chocolatier is Willy Wonka, the owner of a magical and remarkable candy factory.

Willy Wonka hides five golden tickets within his chocolate bars, the ones who find them are granted entrance to the factory that has been closed for years and a lifetime supply of confectionary. Being that Charlie’s father just lost his job, the chance of Charlie even getting a chance at one bar is near impossible.

The first four tickets are found. The first by Augustus Gloop, an obese gluttonous boy, the second by Veruca Salt, a spoiled brat, the third by Violet Beauregarde a record breaking gum chewer and the fourth by Mike Teavee, an aspiring gangster with an unhealthy obsession with television.

Finally with a stroke of luck, Charlie is able to get one candy bar and in it is the final Golden Ticket. He joins the other children on the tour of the factory where many strange and wonderful things await them.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was followed by Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator (1972).

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is the ninth and final book in Children’s Classics month.
