Chap Oscar's People Focus

Dear Chap Oscar,

Our vision for a hunger-free America means nobody has to go to bed hungry. Yet we know that is happening far too often. How is that possible in the "Land of Plenty?"
Perhaps it’s because people don’t fully understand the scope of the problem we face. That’s why we asked you to help us choose the story that best illustrates hunger in America. Now, we need you to help us share that story with Rep. Cooper.
By sharing the real stories behind hunger in America with our leaders in Washington, we hope to help Congress understand that anti-hunger programs are not just line items in a budget, but an expression of our nation's values.
Chap Oscar...will you please share Stephanie’s story with Rep. Cooper?

I only make $8/hr. I don't live an extravagant life. I live with my mother. We pay her rent and I make most of our meals at home and take them to work for my lunch as well. I don't own a car, I take the bus and walk with my son everywhere we need to go.
My son gets free lunch program thankfully at school. Without it in the summer and without school my expenses go up exponentially. We also get SNAP benefits as well. We need all extra help we can get. I am constantly having to tell my son no to any new things like clothes or even shoes. On occasion I can save up to get him those things, but only when he gets free lunches and SNAP benefits.

This is just one of many situations that are being shared with Chaplain Oscar Smith and certainly Brett we are going to share this with all of our TN Distinguished Member of Congress.

Stephanie is not alone! Something needs to be done. Respectively Submitted:

Representative Jim Cooper

Representative Bob Corker

Representative Lamar Alexander

Chaplain Oscar is writing to you today to ask you to co-sponsor a resolution by Representative Jim McGovern (H. Res. 90) expressing the sense of the House of Representatives to reject any cuts to SNAP.

Here is why. I am a strong supporter of my food bank, and I know hunger is a real problem in our community. Recently I participated in a campaign to collect stories from people across the country to illustrate why protecting SNAP, TEFAP, CSFP, WIC, and other programs that help struggling Americans put food on the table is so important. I wanted to share one of those stories with you. Here is a story from Stephanie in Richmond Heights, MO. I believe this story is indicative of what hunger looks like in our community, too.

I understand the need to balance our nation's budget. Can't we do that without taking food away from hungry families? There has to be a way we can reduce our nation's deficit without increasing hunger.

Please co-sponsor Representative McGovern's resolution (H. Res 90). And, if you haven't yet, I urge you to visit your local food bank so you can see for yourself the impact of hunger in your Congressional District.

Sincerely,

Chaplain Oscar Smith and Dear Friend and Advocate Brett Weisel, Director of Advocacy Feeding America.
