“Us Against the World,” due out April 5, 2014, is the first official release from Orlando band I Woke Up Early For My Funeral. The three song EP is a prime sampling of the band’s edgy, melodic hard rock music highlighted by searing guitar riffs, expressive vocals and insightful lyrics.
The EP opens with the guitar fueled “Wearing Masks.” The song’s tough sound is punctuated by steady rhythms and rolling drums. The music in “Soul Changes” has a simmering intensity as the lyrics bring forth visions of shattered illusions, “Unveiling the lies/Reveals the true disguise/Nothing is what it seems.” The title track closes out the EP showing a softer, but definitely not less powerful sound from the band and features additional vocals from Lennon Murphy.
With only three songs it can be tough to get a good idea of a band’s overall sound, but with this EP, a listener gets a glimpse into three different facets of the band’s hard rocking sound and it will have them aching for more. “Us Against the World” offers up a great deal of promise of what to expect from the band’s music on a larger scale.
“Us Against the World” is available for download on CD Baby and Bandcamp. Music fans can check out the band, Brandon James (vocals/guitar), Ryan-Christopher (guitar/piano), John Panaccione (bass) and Josh Henry (drums), on Facebook, Reverbnation and Twitter.
