The Dream Calls For Blood, is the follow up to Death Angel's last release "Relentless Retribution" (2010). Many critics and fans called the last release one of their most powerful albums to date. Recruiting the services from the same producer and studio from the last release, Death Angel planned on capitalizing on the minds of the same people to develop a new release, "The Dream Calls For Blood."
Bay Area thrashers have been true to their roots from the beginning, a little swaying away from styles on their side projects but DA has always been a hard hitting and in your face band.
At first run through listening to "The Dream Calls For Blood" we find that there is absolutely no soft spot in this release. There was no way to give this CD a one run, it was a continuous play, over and over. Being a fan of their music over the years this was a really exciting release. To say this record is "a concentration of metal mayhem" is an understatement. The ferocity that is tossed out in the opening track "Left for Dead" really sets the stage for this release. It contains extremely strong vocals, catchy chorus filled with hooks that are really memorable. A fist pumping track. "Son of the Morning" is a great continuation from the last track. Building the momentum is what this album provides. You will find yourself singing along with Mark before the song is over. "Fallen" is a melodic straight forward thrashy track, memoristic of the classic 80's thrashy music that escaped from the Bay Area (ex. Exodus). "Succubus" is a powerful song and really lets drummer Will Carroll shine. A pounding thrashing madman on the drum kit really lets it all flow. Osegueda also provides the vocal prowess and creative lyrics make this a memorable track. "Execution/Don't Save Me" is a nicely constructed song with the acoustic melodic opening with the quiet soloing that leads into utter destruction. A heavy hitting thrash attack. This song would be a great song to hear live. It is extremely captivating and formulated very well, and the solo's are blistering. "Empty" is a headbanging classic, with of course the signature galloping thrashing guitars and monster drums opening the song. The riff stays prevalent and the vocals stays in union with the guitars. A nice mix. Closing out the release is "Territorial Instinct - Bloodlust" which is a delicate anthem track. Great guitar work and drums make this song flow. Nice backup vocals adds a nice dimension to the mix. Overall this song is a powerhouse guitar intense meltdown from beginning to end.
Overall: on a scale of 1-5, I have to give Death Angel's "The Dream Call For Blood" a no-brainer 5 Stars! There is not one track that did not belong on here. It contains everything you have grown to love about Death Angel. What really stands out is the great drumming and guitar work. Everything meshes in this release. Mark Osegueda is on top of his vocal game and sounds stronger and better than ever. If you want some new music that will satisfy your metal needs than you need to definitely stop whatever you are doing and grab "The Dream Calls For Blood" today!
