CD review: '21' by Adele

When the world raves about a particular artist, I am usually cautious. I find myself going against the grain more often than I would like because I have very picky tastes. If there is not a minimum of poise, energy or refinement in the creation, I will not give it more than 30 seconds of my time.

I was listening to "Hometown Glory" when I read that Adele Adkins had released her new opus. This song was the only one that I had really enjoyed from "19" — despite all the praises her debut album had received. However, for some reason, I felt compelled to give "21" a chance. And I am glad that I paid attention to my gut feelings.

From the fiery bitterness of unrequited love ("Rolling in the Deep") to the nostalgic cries for what love used to be ("Don't You Remember") and redemption ("I'll Be Waiting"), the 11 songs on "21" tell the universal story of human relationships and how people come to terms with the bitterness of break-ups. Whether she feels forsaken or regretful, the 23-year-old does not simply sing. There is something beautifully surreal and stirring in her voice that compels you to listen. When she recites her lyrics, you feel a deep connection.

Any good singer could have recorded "21." However, I doubt that many would have managed to pull it off the way Adele did. The album is not for the faint of heart. It is intense, gripping and emotionally potent. For example, her rendition of The Cure's "Lovesong" is magnificent; and "Someone Like You" and "I'll Be Waiting" will be best enjoyed in the loneliness of nightly ponderings. Still, "Turning Tables" and "Set Fire to the Rain" are a little too safe and jarring compared with the rest of the album.

While "21" is not my favorite CD, I will still give it four stars. It is a worthy project that truly deserves its spot at the top of the charts.
