Castello di Ama, Al Poggio, 2011

When thinking about the great wines of Tuscany, only red wines come to mind. There are few scatterings of white wine produced here and deserve to be recognized. One of these whites is Castello di Ama’s Al Poggio, 2011. In the 1980’s Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio were planted on the estate located in the Chianti Classico region. The wine maker wanted to make a dry white wine and the native white grapes; Trebbiano and Malvasia are usually used primarily for making Vin Santo.
The 2011 Al Poggio is a blend of 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Grigio. 40% of the juice is fermented in new and first use oak barrels and allowed to sit on the skins to develop rich characteristics. The Al Poggio has a golden yellow color. The aromas are filled with delicious apple, peaches with a light touch of toasted oak and crisp minerality. Lemon sneaks into the palate with apple and wet slate. This wine has a full mouth feel with a medium long finish. Enjoy this wine as an aperitif or with some marinated vegetables and light seafood preparations.
