An amusement park theme - rollercoaster, carrousel, games, popcorn, fire jugglers, stilt walkers, dancers - was the setting for the 11th annual Premios Juventud (Youth Awards) Thursday night at the University of Miami BankUnited Center. A night of unexpected surprises: a hologram performance with Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin (left many wondering maybe the new performance trend) and a tie for bachata singer Romeo Santos and pop singer Enrique Iglesias.
The clouds held up long enough for the award show to start. Although the thunder, lightning and rain didn't dampen anyone’s evening as celebrities, artists, guests, and fans were already in the venue singing, dancing and hoping their favorite was a winner in one of the categories awarded: music, movies, novelas (Spanish soap operas), sports, and pop culture. In between commercial breaks, attendees were instructed what props to use (given to all attendees as they entered the venue) as stage crew rushed to set up for the next performances.
Of the 27 categories, about half of the winners were presented mostly music related in which Romeo won only five of his 12 nominations and Enrique also took five awards of the six he had nods for. Along with their wins for the evening, Romeo and Enrique performed along with 18 other performances during the three hour celebration. Wisin was joined via hologram by Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez for their performance of "Adrenalina." In addition, there was Mexican Regional music with the most emotional performance of uprising artist Chiquis Rivera, daughter of the late and legendary Jenni Rivera.
And added as the most acclaimed performances were Premios Juventud Supernova recipient Enrique Iglesias singing two of his most popular songs - "El Perdedor" and Descemer Bueno's penned hit "Bailando" with Descemer and Gente de Zona joining Enrique. In addition, this year’s Idol de la Juventud recipient Pitbull was another top favorite singing a medley of a few of his latest hits joined by uprising talents, Don Miguel and Austin Mahoney. Also to mention is Spaniard Natalia Jimenez who deserves more recognition for her impeccable voice and interpretation of her latest single "Creo en Mí."
Other performances included duos, new artists and song debuts: Beck G, Carlos Vives, Chocquibtown, David Bisbal, El Dasa, Espinoza Paz, Farruko, Gerardo Ortiz, J Balvin, Jencarlos Canela, Juanes, Luis Coronel, Maluma, Prince Royce, and Chino y Nacho. Bringing Premios Juventud to an end, an award show more geared to this year’s most popular music genre and to the liking of youth – urban, pop and bachata - lacking the accustomed merengue and salsa genres.
