The Carl Palmer Band consisting of guitarist Paul Bielatowicz , bassist Simon Fitzpatrick and Carl Palmer on Drums, made a rare appearance at The Englert Theatre on Halloween Eve. Carl Palmer’s signature Ludwig double-bass drum kit was center stage with a CP logo projected on the stage wall. The logo, a take on the famous ELP logo represented an evening of ELP music by The Carl Palmer Band. The Carl Palmer Band opened their show with a powerful rendition of Barbarian. Replacing Keith Emerson’s keyboards was Paul Bielatowicz’s guitar techniques, which actually worked well, even with the Joe Satriani comparisons. At the end of the song Carl Palmer told the audience it was like playing in his living room. He was referring to the less than 100 people who were on the main floor. The less than usual attendees at The Englert did not lessen the involvement between the band and the cozy Carl Palmer fans. Several standing ovations drew sincere appreciation from Carl Palmer and his band. Carl Palmer’s drumming continues to be listed in the top 10 when many make their top drummers of all time list.

In the 1970’s Emerson Lake and Palmer helped provide staples for what would become classic rock radio with songs like Lucky Man, Karn Evil # 9 (Welcome Back My Friends to the Show that Never Ends…) and In The Beginning. The Carl Palmer Band selected songs that could be considered as deeper tracks from the ELP catalogue and ELP live shows. Mostly refereed to as progressive rock with a leaning to the classical side, The Carl Palmer Band almost earned a progressive metal tag with the addition of Paul Bielatowicz and Simon Fitzpatrick. There were times that I heard strains of King Crimson’s 21st Century Schizoid Man as Carl and Paul went back and forth at break neck speed.
The Carl Palmer Band is a prog drummer’s dream.
