Replicating a card game in a video game is nothing new, but a hybrid card/tabletop roleplaying game? Now you might be onto something. Card Hunter has a foot each in Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons, combining turn-based adventuring with chasing gear through a deck building system into something not unlike a modern MMO. Cooperative play isn’t offered, a strange decision given the community aspects of its inspirations, but competitive multiplayer at least allows you the opportunity to pit your team of three figures against a friend’s if not alongside them. Infused with self-depricating humor that takes a roleplaying veteran to realize the full “crazy but true” nature of, Card Hunter suffers from being fairly short for the dedicated player and failing to find a way to work around some common tabletop maladies but it's still definitely worth at least a try considering that it won’t cost you a dime.
