It’s the summer and as far as movies are concerned this is a big year for movies in the Marvel universe. With The Avengers coming out next summer, Marvel studios are cranking out the necessary movies to lead into next summer’s blockbuster. Now with blockbuster movies being released more often than not you have a video game tie-in for the film. However, the game, Captain America: Super Soldier does not directly follow the plot of the recently released movie. The question is, is it worth your time? That’s what I’m here to tell you.
Captain America: Super Soldier does have various elements from the new film, such as voice actor Chris Evans reprising his role as Captain America. Personally seeing the movie after playing the game, really gave me a different perspective on the game. As you are thrown into the game you start out as the Captain as opposed to the film where he is skinny, and small in the beginning. The enemies you face in the game are mostly the same type throughout the whole game. Basically you just face different versions of the hydra soldiers throughout the game, and larger robotic enemies. The combat in the game is similar to that of Batman: Arkham Asylum, and that’s an awesome addition.
There is more to do in this game than just punch people in the face and throw your shield at a bunch of enemies, there is also various platforming spots, which is actually pretty enjoyable in some parts of the game. Puzzles are thrown in from time to time, whether you’re trying to open a door, or sabotage enemy cannons, these puzzles are pretty simple. As far as the environments in the level go, they pretty much revolve around the castle of the hydra soldiers. The area to explore around is surprisingly massive, with various collectibles that when acquired unlocks various items such as concept art, storyboard design, and films talking about various enemy types in the game.
The graphics in the game are quite good, not as good as Batman Arkham Asylum, but they are good. The environments are quite detailed and there is a lot to explore to keep you from just going from point A to point B. The ending is a little disappointing, with the end boss not as satisfying as the final battle in the film. To sum up the single player mode, it will take you about 8 to 9 hours to complete the main story.
Once you complete the game, there is a challenge mode as well. In this mode you have a series of tasks to complete in a set time limit. These challenges range from beating up a bunch bad guys, and collecting items while moving through the set level. This mode is a great add to the game, and gives you something to do after you beat the main story. One of the very cool things in the game that I noticed is at the end is that if you haven’t collected every item you can go back to your save file and just explore all the areas to collect or unlock what you need to.
In conclusion, this is one of the better movie games to come out in recent memory. It has its flaws, the enemies sometimes get repetitive and sometimes the camera gets in your way, but the game is enjoyable from start to finish. Most movie games just follow the story of the movie and most of the time the game fails, but this one goes outside the box a little bit and does something different and it shows.
Score- 7/10
