Cantina Tollo, Colle Secco, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Riserva, 2010

I have a confession to make; Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is not one of my favorite wines. Recently during a blind tasting, I identified the wine in the glass as Montepulciano d’Abruzzo because I detected the aromas and flavors that I didn’t enjoy about that grape.
That being said, it is not a blanket statement. There are some Montepulciano d’Abruzzos I really enjoy. Also don’t confuse Montepulciano d’Abruzzo with Vino Nobile di Abruzzo. The Vino Nobile is 100% Sangiovese from Tuscany’s Montepulciano region. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is the name of a grape from Italy’s Abruzzo region.
Cantina Tollo, Colle Secco, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Riserva, 2010 is one of these wines I really enjoy. Dark garnet red in the glass with rich aromas of tart red berries, clove, vanilla and sage excite palate of what’s to come. The mouth is hit upfront with those red berries with vanilla and baking spices in the background with smooth tannins leading to a long finish.
Enjoy this wine with pasta with meat ragu, game and roasted meats.
