Its good to see blood being used so excessively these days. Anytime you see a trailer like the one for The Butchers Boys the first thing that comes to mind is how much violence will we witness in this film? Well even though it took a second to get started once The Butcher Boys gets going its a gore filled hell ride that sneaks up on you. The film stars Ali Faulkner, Edwin Neal, and is directed by Duane Graves and Justin Meeks. Butcher Boys is available today on VOD.
In Butcher Boys a group of friends are out celebrating a birthday when one wrong decision makes it a night of terror for them. These friends are all dynamic in their own way. None mote than Barbie played by Tory Tompkins who from the start shows that she uses sex to get what she wants. The star of the film is Sissy played by Ali Faulkner who finds herself in a night of survival trying to escape the gritty streets and the cannibalistic Butcher Boys.
Also known as the Bone Boys these guys are a no holds barred group of thugs with a taste for flesh that can only be rivaled by money. You can tell the influence of Texas Chainsaw Massacre in the film as we see a family dynamic being portrayed by the clan in a pack type of theory. Butcher Boys is entertaining for sure but unfortunately reminds us too much of horror films of recent time.
The best thing I enjoyed about Butcher Boys is the turn the film takes when you find out they are cannibals. The movie starts off with an intense car scene and leaves the friends stranded. Soon after we see the first feeding scene of the boys and I was taken back by it to say the least. The entire time I was just thinking “hey this is just another survival horror”, but I was totally wrong. I like cannibal movies I really do. The intrigue of Butcher Boys is it is totally unexpected to see these guys as cannibals but unfortunately after you find out the film fizzles out from there.
It seemed as if the pace of Butcher Boys picked up towards the end but I though it hurt the overall film as it felt rushed. The ending scene alone is chaotic and seems like there really is no direction. I asked the directors about it and they said it was the hardest part of the film to do. I can see that as you have so much going on at once. In a sense the ending is perfect for the film because it encompass the entire movie in that last part. Organized chaos. Films like this are hard because you notice so many similar things from other movies at play here. When you have a start as intense at it was for Butcher Boys its hard to keep up especially when you are really focusing on one character the entire time. I thought Ali Faulkner did a great job as the lead and really shines in the second half of the film.
In conclusion Butcher Boys is a moderate horror film that starts off with tons of potential but losing momentum immediately after its turning point. There is room to grow here so if a sequel was produced I would watch it for sure. Butcher Boys is available today on VOD so if you desire a little chaos and carnage in your life this weekend watch this one for sure! 2/5
