The 67th Cannes Film Festival that runs May 14-25 features for the fifth year the Queer Palm and the jury members were announced March 30. The top prize goes to a film dealing with LGBT themes. Last year L'Inconnu du Lac directed by Alain Guiraudie took home the award.

Director Bruce LaBruce heads the jury this year. His film Gerontophilia was shown at Venice Days last year, the story of a relationship between a young man obsessed with elderly men.

Accompanying the director are the rest of the jury: Anna Margarita Albelo (Who’s Afraid of Vagina Wolf?), João Ferreira, artistic director and programmer of the Queer Lisboa festival in Portugal, Lipinska Charlotte, journalist and jury member for the 2010 Camera d 'Or and part of the selection committee for the 2012 International Critics' Week, and Brazilian director Ricky Mastro, film festival programmer for Recifest last year.

The Queer Palm as yet is not an official sidebar of the Cannes Film Festival but it is growing in stature and importance. The 2012 Queer Palm president was Julie Gayet, who was nominated for a supporting César Award in May.

Cannes has made some inroads into embracing films made by openly gay directors with some fleshed out characters and two notable directors last year who made films with overt gay themes: Abdellatif Kechiche ("La Vie d'Adéle") and Alain Guiraudie ("L'inconnu du lac").

It will probably take a decade before this parallel competition for the "Queer Palm" will be officially acknowledged by the Cannes administration. As for now, the pageant is growing in importance.

The dedicated Queer Palm organizers are Franck Finance Maduriera and Christopher Lambert.
