Candlebox stopped in Rhode Island for a sold-out performance at The Rock Junction in West Greenwich. The band is currently on their 20th Anniversary Tour, marking twenty years since the release of the self-titled debut album.
Singer Kevin Martin announced early in the set hat he was dealing with some minor illness that was causing him some vocal issues. His performance was so dynamic, I think few would have noticed. The rest of the band - Peter Klett (lead guitar), Scott Mercado (drums), Sean Hennesy (rhythm guitar), Adam Kury (bass) - sounded incredible.
The band's live set is a strong mix of songs from throughout their catalog, including "Far Behind" and "You" from their self-titled debut album, to "She Come Over Me" and "Sweet Summertime" from their latest release, "Love Stories and Other Musings." One gets the feeling that they choose the songs they like to play, rather than just pandering by playing all the singles.
The crowd was fantastic. The venue had recently been renovated to accommodate more people. Despite being full, you never felt crammed and could move around. The entire crowd was lively and attentive during the entire set. People were cheering, dancing and making out. During "Far Behind" and "You" the crowd was singing so loudly that you almost couldn't hear Martin sing during some parts.
Candlebox was on fire tonight. I've only seen a handful of their live performances, but every time, I'm leaving wanting more.
