'Californication' Season 6 soundtrack mixes up indie cred and classic rock

EOne Music Nashville will be releasing a collection of music from season 6 of the hit Showtime series Californication next week, a surprisingly enjoyable collection of classic rock covers and original music from an impressive array of artists.

Of course, this should comes as to surprise to fans, given the series' penchant for including copious classic rock references within its writing and characters. Californication-created by Tom Kapinos and starring David Duchovny as burnt out novelist Hank Moody, whose case of writer's block is severely compounded fractured relationships with his daughter and ex-girlfriend-wears this rock obsession upon its sleeve with pride, with artists as varied as Metallica, Depeche Mode, Iron Maiden and David Bowie receiving the cover treatment in a smart 'n satisfactory style.

Granted there are a couple of duds here-The Blind Pets "Fever" and Mark Lanegan's "Strange Religion" amongst the offenders-yet there are also a fair number of surprises, as well, not the least of which are Lissie's and Ryan Adams' tender covers of Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" and "Wasted Years," respectively, while Marilyn Manson's take on the Depeche Mode classic "Personal Jesus" oozes a slinky and subversive sexuality comparative to the original.

Elsewhere, Swedish neo-psych act The Soundtrack of Our Lives and Ho Ho Silver Oh featuring Leslie Stevens both offer lush and atmospheric offerings, while tracks from Warren Zevon, The Litter and Joe Walsh offer up their classic rock pedigree in style. Overall, this season 6 soundtrack to Californication is an enjoyable romp which offers a fair balance of smart indie cred and shoot-from-the-hip rock 'n roll attitude.
