Bullhead Cantina Grand Opening with Dean Welch & the Rhythm Method

Bullhead Cantina celebrated its grand opening Friday night (2/3/12) with a live perfomance by Dean Welch & the Rhythm Method. This up and coming Humboldt Park hot spot is located at 1143 N. California Ave between Haddon and Thomas Ave, just around the corner of Division and offers an array of upscale tacos and whiskey.

"It's got a kind of rustic/vintage feel while maintaining a neighborhood vibe," states owner Paco Ruiz, who bobs in and out of the kitchen, greeting patrons and overseeing the bar. "The name Bullhead is just something kind of different. I wanted to offer a little something that is different than everything around."

Different indeed. While the Humboldt/Logan Square area is no stranger to the taco, Bullhead Cantina boasts a full "Taco Bar" menu. Each is served on a hand rolled, corn tortilla and piled with the freshest ingredients, from chicken to tilapia, and cabbage to sweet potato. A few particular stand-outs on the menu include the 'Carnitas' which are slow cooked in banana leaves and fried, served with cilantro, onion and drunken salsa. Another is the "grilled tilapia,' which consists of a tamarind and bourbon glaze served with a reduction of tomato sauce, cucumber, sour cream and lettuce. There are also plenty of vegeatarian options that don't just include avocado. The Beet taco is a favorite among some of the staff, offering roasted beets tossed in a citrus reduction with grilled red onion, tomato, lettuce, cucumber, chile powder and shredded cheese. Not a taco lover? Don't fret. They also offer bar food staples like burgers, salads and chilli.

The cocktail list is extensive enough, but the real pull is the whiskey. The variety behind the bar is ever growing and changing and plans are in the works for monthly tastings and classes. Trust me, it's not just Jameson here.

Also in the works are monthly music nights. Dean Welch and the Rhythm Method were nice enough to stop by and delight patrons to a live set of their blues infused rock, while throwing in a couple covers to satisfy all tastes. While the space was a bit cramped for a quartet the guys did their best to entertain.

The staff was friendly, the food was good, the whisky flowing and the music loud. What else could you ask for?
