It’s been a long, cold, hard winter for much of North America this year. Drivers were forced to abandon their vehicles on the roadway due to treacherous driving conditions. Families were stuck in their homes for days on end without power or heat. Musically, nothing new came down the pipeline that was worth mentioning. Now spring has sprung, most of the country is defrosting and some great new music is being released to help us all de-stress from Old Man Winter. It’s time to open those windows, and test the limits of those new speakers you got for Christmas and introduce your neighbors to Broken Crown Halo, the latest release from Lacuna Coil on Century Media Records.
For all you old school Coil fans, this is more of what you would come to expect from the Italian-based rockers and is the reason why you love them. They pick up right where they left off in 2012 with Dark Adrenaline. The sound is much the same living by the rules of if it isn’t broke, then don’t try to fix it. The first track, “Nothing Stands In Our Way” sets the tone for the rest of the album. The bass is thunderous and pulsating thanks to Marco Coti Zelati. The guitars of Marco ‘Maus’ Biazzi are heavy and mysterious in typical Coil fashion. The vocal duet of Cristina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro are a nice contrast to each other and really work throughout the album. It’s tough to balance out the angelic high-pitch of Scabbia, but Ferro’s dark growls do so easily in perfect yin-yang fashion. No more is this evident than in the second track, “Zombies”.
For you guys who are mesmerized by one of hard rock’s hottest singers, check out “Hostage to the Light”. It’s all Scabbia in prime form. Her vocal range really shines on this track more so than ever before. This is one track that will be great to see and hear live. In reality, Broken Crown Halo is theatrical hard rock creatively crafted in pure Lacuna Coil fashion. This is their best offering to date and the timing couldn’t be any better. So go ahead, turn it up – way up. Wake those bears from hibernation. They’ve slept long enough already.
Be sure to pick up Broken Crown Halo at your favorite music outlet on April 1, 2014. Then catch them live as they continue to tour across the country. Visit their website for dates and cities in your area.
