The DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Hotel Boston-Cambridge, which is technically just across the river from Cambridge on the Boston side, is a great choice for families visiting the area. While any DoubleTree hotel offers a strong first impression for kids with a fresh, hot cookie at the check-in desk, the modern and spacious Boston-Cambridge location has several other amenities that make it family-friendly.
First and foremost, nothing beats an all-suites hotel when traveling with cookie grabbers. Parents can enjoy the separate bedroom, while the kids are asleep on the fold-out-couch in the living room area. A little extra space can go a long way to improving family dynamics during your stay. Two LCD TVs and a mini-fridge are also helpful. When the inevitable pool request is made, there is a pool and hot tub. However, the pool is a little run-down. The good news is that a full-scale renovation is planned, but the pool will be closed for this process from January 15 through February 15.
While the DoubleTree Boston-Cambridge is not located in downtown Boston, there are some advantages to its location. It is just a five minute drive or twenty minute walk to Harvard Square, only ten to fifteen minutes by car to most downtown and harbor front attractions and is also very close to Allston, Brighton and Brookline. The complimentary hotel shuttle has drop off points in Harvard Square, Copley Square and at the Aquarium. So you can leave the car behind and avoid the challenges of parking downtown or in Cambridge. In addition, room rates are generally more reasonable than similar quality hotels downtown.
DoubleTree hotels are offering a Family Fun Package which includes internet access and breakfast for four. While the package does cost about $20 more than the rack rate, so may not be the best choice if you like to head out for breakfast or need an escape from surfing the net, it does save approximately $30 over buying those items separately. The included breakfast at the DoubleTree Cambridge is a high-quality full buffet served in their Green Room Restaurant with a good variety of fresh items and omelets, French toast and pancakes made to order. The Family Fun Package has a minimum 3-night stay requirement, which is unfortunate for families looking for a shorter weekend getaway, but many other discounted rates are available for shorter stays such as AAA or prepaid discounts. There is a daily fee for parking at the hotel.
Writer’s Note: I had the opportunity to stay at the hotel at no cost to evaluate the property. This did not bias the article/review.
