Tucked away on the quiet corner of Grand Avenue and Wood Street in Ukrainian Village is a little-known brunch place called Breakfast House. With food so scrumptious, night owls wouldn't mind waking up early to try something off the menu.
Potential patrons might bypass Breakfast House since the establishment is located in a tiny building, but don’t let the space fool you. With two indoor dining areas and a charming outdoor patio, immediate seating is readily available—even for Sunday brunch. The interior decor matches the exterior: It’s simple and quaint. That’s alright though since the sole purpose of Breakfast House visitors is to eat good food in a comfortable atmosphere.
Breakfast House has a tasty selection of both sweet and savory meals. The menu offers a fine assortment of breakfast foods and a variety of beverages—thumbs way up to the freshly squeezed OJ—and sides. Those who have a sweet tooth should try the vanilla waffle ($7.50). It’s light and fluffy in the middle and crispy around the edges, with just the right amount of vanilla mixed into the batter. It is truly a crowd-pleaser since it’s “as big as your plate,” just as the menu’s description of the dish promises.
Those who prefer savory foods should try the cornmeal cakes ($8.50). These special pancakes have a cornbread texture with a side of southwest tangy sauce that adds a kick to the flavorful meal. The dish comes with thinly sliced pieces of ham and eggs any style, which makes the hearty meal a good balance of both carbs and protein.
Breakfast House may be small in stature but it’s huge in personality. The unexpected amount of seating, affordable prices and variety of food—a generous lunch menu and recently added dinner options are also available which, if it’s anything like the breakfast options, should prove delectable—make the neighborhood diner a hidden gem of Chicago. Oh, and the quality of service is amazing. The owner and wait staff are some of the friendliest people in the food industry. Not to mention, they do carry out and delivery. And there’s free street parking in front of the restaurant. It doesn't get much better than that.
