Brave Beak (Free, iPhone) is a 2D side-scrolling action game from Octavian Stirbei. The premise of Brave Beak is that the player is controlling a bird who is attempting to save a princess. The game is played similarly to popular iPhone games such as Angry Birds and Tiny Wings, but manages to change the formula enough so that it is fresh and interesting.
The player starts each level by flinging the bird out of a slingshot. After this the player controls the altitude of the bird by tapping and holding the screen. The bird has limited energy, so the player must attempt to get more energy by eating fish or gathering a power-up that can be found in the level. Each level is completed by achieving goals present in each level. From flying through a rainbow to finding a pirate ship, the goals are a way to keep gameplay fresh and interesting.
The presentation of this game is another area in which it shines. The bright, tropical colors fit the mood very well and also works quite well with the gameplay. The soundtrack is also very great. With soothing beats and even a fully voiced title-screen song, music alone is almost reason enough to play this game.
This game is an absolute must buy for fans of side-scrolling games, action games, or fans of fun and varied gameplay.
