One of the new television shows starting soon is “Dracula,” starring Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. Since the late 1800s, when Bram Stoker’s book came out, the anti-hero Dracula has been a popular vampire. Over the years, there have been many film versions. Today’s Halloween film is one that was released in 1992. Of all the Dracula movies, this is considered one of the most faithful to the original story.
Set in the late 1800s, it stars Gary Oldman as a romance focused Dracula. The long-term widower lives in a giant castle, and one evening, he is visited by a young lawyer, Jonathan Harker, played by Keanu Reeves. Dracula sees a picture of Harker’s attractive fiancée, Mina Murray, played by Winona Ryder. Mina looks identical to Dracula’s wife, who died centuries earlier. Harker is imprisoned in the castle while Dracula goes to find her.
Gary Oldman is excellent as Dracula. He has a strange accent, which is a little hard to understand a times. But it is still a great performance. Winona Ryder is equally effective as Mina, his long lost love.
The look of the film is also great. The movie does an excellent job recreating England in the late 1800s. Dracula’s castle is also very well done.
All in all, this film is easily worth seeing. It is one of the best of the Dracula films.
A costume of Dracula, or any other vampire, would be a great Halloween costume. See this website for details.
