The movie Heaven Is For Real, which came out earlier this year, is a must see for anyone who is a seeker of truth. Having had a near death experience back in 1988, it was certainly no big stretch of the imagination.
And for those who have never experienced a little piece of heaven, you will certainly not be disappointed. Even those who have lost faith are bound to be affected by Connor Corum’s portrayal of 4-year-old Colton Burpo. Kudos go to director Randall Wallace for choosing this young boy for the role. His blond hair, big blue eyes and chubby little face and adorable dimples lends credibility to Colton’s sweet innocence.
This wonderful movie is based on the #1 New York Times best-selling book with the same title. It recounts the struggle that a father and small-town preacher, Todd Burpo portrayed by award winning actor, Greg Kinnear, has as he tries to determine the truth about the afterlife.
Little Colton is rushed to the hospital with a burst appendix. It was during the operation, which the doctors did not think he would survive, that he claims he went to heaven. Afterward, Todd hears his son speak of heaven as if he were relating any other day. He talks about what it is like, meeting Jesus and sitting on his lap, and even meeting Todd’s own grandfather. Astoundingly, Colton says Jesus has blueg/green eyes.
Should he believe his son? Or was he simply hallucinating as he struggled to survive? And what should he tell his own congregation? The Bible speaks of heaven but do people really believe it exists?
Colton’s mother, Sonja, played by Kelly Reilly, is an even harder nut to crack. Not only does she believe her son has a great imagination but she also worries about the media attention that has placed him in the spotlight. It is not until Colton reveals information that he could never have known that she realizes for herself that heaven truly is for real and Colton has seen it.
He relates his amazing journey with such lack of guile that it is difficult to dismiss. Now 11 years old, the boy who glimpsed the other side relates what heaven is like for all to hear. See the above video.
Another child who claims to have walked and talked with Jesus is Akiane Kramarik. She was born in 1994 in Mount Morris, Illinois to atheist parents. Akiane and her siblings were home schooled and had no access to television.
At 3 years old, she began having dreams and visions of heaven. When she started telling her parents about them at 4 years old, they knew it was not due to any influences on her young mind. Her mother, Forelli, told Christianity Today that her beliefs changed when Akiane began sharing her experiences.
At just 4 years of age, she began writing poetry and at 6 she created her first work of art. In one of her paintings, she portrays Jesus with blue/green eyes just as Colton had described them. She claims her paintings were inspired by her visions and the money she makes is donated to charity.
“I have been blessed by God. And if I'm blessed, there is one reason and one reason only, and that is to help others,” she said adding that she is making the donations in an effort to combat poverty. As well, she said, “I want people to find hope in my paintings and draw people's attention to God.”
