Born of the Gods – The Rest
Has it really been four months already? Seems like just a few weeks ago I was writing the Theros reviews. Guess it's time to dive into Born of the Gods, the new set that is hitting the shelves on February 1st and making us spend all our money updating our decks. The cards we will be drafting our of pack one from, and making up half our sealed pools, in Limited for the next four months. So let's dive into the new toys as we go card by card look to at their effect on the game.
Chromanticore – WUBRG – Enchantment Creature – Manticore – M – Bestow 2WUBRG. Flying, frist strike, vigilance, trample, lifelink. Enchanted creature gets +4/+4 and has flying, first strike, vigilance, trample, and lifelink. 4/4. I don't ever plan to cast this for it's casting cost or it's bestow cost. I'm straight up reanimating this thing in that Solar Flare deck I was talking about back in the white review. Cool thing is that it is so bad in draft that I'm sure people will pass it to me, unless they are rare drafting.
Ephara, God of the Polis – 2WU – Legendary Enchantment Creature – God – M – Indestructible. As long as your devotion to white and blue is less than seven, Ephara isn't a creature. At the beginnning of each upkeep, if you had another creature enter the battlefield under your control last turn, draw a card. 6/5. I like it but I don't thing we are going to see this played outside of Limtied and Commander. The effect just isn't that big on the game state.
Ephara's Enlightenment – 1WU – Enchantment – Aura – U – Enchant creature. When Ephara's Enlightenment enters the battlefield, put a +1/+1 counter on enchanted creature. Enchanted creature has flying. Whenever a creature enters the battlefield under your control, you may return Ephara's Enlightenment to its owner's hand. That's kind of a cool enchantment for the late game when you have the mana to be able to bounce it, and recast it, to get more tokens or upgrade it to a new creature. Granted this trick is only getting used in Limited were removal is going to be very lite.
Fanatic of Xenagos – 1RG – Creature – Centaur Warrior – U – Trample. Tribute 1 (As this creature enters the battlefield, an opponent of your choice may place a +1/+1 counter on it.) When Fanatic of Xenagos enters the battlefield, if tribute wasn't paid, it gets +1/+1 and gains haste until end of turn. 3/3. I think this is the best of the Tribute creatures. Either it's a 4/4 with haste for one turn, or it's a 4/4 all time. That's got to be Standard good.
Karametra, God of Harvests – 3GW – Legendary Enchantment Creature – God – M – Indestructible. As long as your devotion to green and white is less than sever, Karametra isn't a creature. Whenever you cast a creature spell, you may search you library for a Forest or Plains card, put it onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle your library. 6/7. Kind of cool for an effect in GW. I can see this being awesome in Limited and if we get a GW deck in Standard this is going to be an auto inclusion.
Kiora, the Crashing Wave – 2UG – Planeswalker – Kiora – M - +1: Until your next turn, prevent all damage that would be dealt to and dealt by target permanent an opponent controls. -1: Draw a card. You may play an additional land this turn. -5: You get an emblem with “At the beginning of your end step, put a 9/9 blue Kraken creature token onto the battlefield.” Starting Loyalty 2. I think this planeswalker is kind of just a Limited and Commander card. I really think this is going to end up in the same pile of trade bate as Ral Zarek for players that have a mad on for any walker they see.
Kiora's Follower – GU – Creature – Merfolk – U – Tap: Untap another target permanent. 2/2. I like how this is designed to work with Inspired cards in Limited so they they don't just die in combat.
Mogis, God of Slaughter – 2BR – Legendary Enchantment Creature – God – M – Indestructible. As long as your devotion to black and red is less than seven, Mogis isn't a creature. At the beginning of each opponent's upkeep, Mogis deals 2 damage to that player unless he or she sacrifices a creature. 7/5. Not a bad choice for a new Commander, I'm loving it in Limited and I plan to get two for my Minotaur deck for Standard. Awesome card is awesome.
Phenax, God of Deception – 3UB – Legendary Enchantment Creature – God – M – Indestructible. As long as your devotion to blue and black is less than seven, Phenax isn't a creature. Creatures you control have “Tap: Target player puts the top X cards of his or her library into his or her graveyard, where X is that creature's toughness. 4/7. I was hoping that this would be awesome and I could get one altered to look like me playing the bass, get it Fen Axe. Granted when it comes to the ability of this guy it seems I got the short end of the stick. I mean come on Mill? That hasn't been a good deck choice in Limited for a few years.
Ragemonger – 1BR – Creature Minotaur Shaman – U – Minotaur spells cost BR less to cast. This effect reduces on the amount of colored mana you pay. (For example, if you cast a Minotaur spell with mana cost 2R, it cost 2 to cast.) 2/3. I must have a playset of these. This is the card that makes the Minotaur decks I want to build into an awesome powerhouse. Turn three cast this, drop another, and you only have to spend colorless mana on just about any Minotaur other than Boros Reckoner. In Limited this works just as well. Loving this Block just for this tribe alone.
Reap What is Sown – 1GW – Instant – U – Put a +1/+1 counter on up to three target creatures. It's a good combat trick with Heroic in Limited.
Siren of the Silent Song – 1UB – Creature – Zombie Siren – U – Flying. Inspired – Whenever Siren of the Silent Song becomes untapped, each opponent discards a card, then puts the top card of his or her library into his or her graveyard. 2/1. Now that is an Inspired card that will rock Limited. Evasion, discard, and milling. I like it but I hate that it is going to bait me into wanting to try to draft mill. Still I would take this just for the discard effect, but sadly if I'm in UB I'll end up with a bunch of janky heroic abilities and mill effects that wont build a unified deck.
Xenagos, God of Revels – 3RG – Legendary Enchantment Creature – God – M- Indestructible. AS long as your devotion to red and green is less than seven, Xenagos isn't a creature. At the beginning of combat on your turn, another target creature you control gains haste and gets +X/+X until end of turn, where X is that creature's power. 6/5. Man, the two colored god are lame compared to the mono-colored ones. Just an always on pump spell for Limited is kind of cool. Seeing how RG Devotion is a thing in Standard I'm sure this is going to find a home in it at some point. Granted, I'm just not a big fan of this effect.
Astral Cornucopia – XXX – Artifact – R – Astral Cornucopia enters the battlefield with X charge counters on it. Tap: Choose a color. Add one mana of that color to your mana pool for each charge counter on Astral Cornucopia. Only thing cool about this is that casting cost. Yeah, this is so going to be a dollar rare you can tip the ladies with. Still casting this for three and just getting one counter on it will be good enough in Limited.
Gorgon's Head – 1 – Artifact – Equipment – U – Equipped creature has deathtouch. Equip 2. Like they weren't going to print this card in this block. I'm happy that the casting cost and the equip cost were kept low so that it would have an effect on the game in Limited. It's just sad that Deathtouch is only a constructed worthy ability when you are putting it on a pinger that can untap and fire again. Here's hoping for a Goblin Sharpshooter reprint.
Hero's Podium – 5 – Legendary Artifact – R – Each legendary creature you control gets +1/+1 for each other legendary creature you control. X, tap: Look at the top X cards of your library. You may reveal a legendary creature from among them and put it into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order. Loving this as a Coat of Arms for non-tribal Commander decks that use a number of legendary creatures. Kind of works in Limited so you can dig for you legendary bombs.
Pillar of War – 3 – Artifact Creature – Golem – U – Defender. As long as Pillar of War is enchanted, it can attack as though it didn't have defender. 3/3. I find that every set has to have a (blank) matters 3/3 artifact dork for three mana that loses defender if (blank) happens. It's just a rule of card design for Limited.
Siren Song Lyre – 2 – Artifact – Equipment – U – Equipped creature has “2, tap: Tap target creature.” Equip 2. Good card for Limited. Tap down there fatty so it can't attack, tap down there blocker, and it turns on one to two of your Inspired dorks during you opponent's end step.
Springleaf Drum – 1 – Artifact – U – Tap, tap an untapped creature you control: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool. This is a Modern staple for Robots and Affinity that will become a Standard staple as well. I think this plus Pain Seer is going to be a combo in most decks. Good job artifacts on ending your part of the reviews on a strong note. Not we just have three lands and I'm done.

Tempe of Malice – Land – R – Temple of Malice enters the battlefield tapped. When Temple of Malice enters the battlefield, scry 1. Tap: Add B or R to your mana pool. Just a little bit more...
Temple of Plenty – Land – R – Temple of Plenty enters the battlefield tapped. When Temple of Plenty enters the battlefield, scry 1. Tap: Add G or W to your mana pool. WTF! Why only three of the cycle Wizards? Where the heck are my Golgari and Izzet temples. I love these lands but I'm kind of wondering what the state of next years Standard is going to be once we lose the Shocks and Gates. Personally I want a return of the fetch lands. Not just because I want Modern to stay cheap, but because I also want the Eldrazi to return. #FreeZendikar
Well, that it's all for Born of the Gods. It's a great set for Limited with a few cool cards for the other formats, but I don't think we are going to see much of a change to Standard. I think the biggest effect this set has is that I make me want to play more Limited and Block events. Well, it look as my job here is done. Time me to update trade binders and get ready for the Presque Isle pre-release.
