Born of the Gods – Green cards
Has it really been four months already? Seems like just a few weeks ago I was writing the Theros reviews. Guess it's time to dive into Born of the Gods, the new set that is hitting the shelves on February 1st and making us spend all our money updating our decks. The cards we will be drafting our of pack one from, and making up half our sealed pools, in Limited for the next four months. So let's dive into the new toys as we go card by card look to at their effect on the game.
Archetype of Endurance – 6GG – Enchantment Creature – Boar – U – Creature you control have hexproof. Creatures your opponents control lose hexproof and can't have or gain hexproof. 6/5. This card, oh does it suck. It sucks so much that I'm just going to call it jank and tell you why the cycle is worded as it is with the “and can't have or gain hexproof.” line. There's a weird rules interaction were if you have effect like this they get into the complex rules of layers and timestamps. The best known example of this is in Modern when Melira pod faces Infect. The whole the Inkmoth Nexus deals damage but that damage has no effect thing. With these creatures worded this way you can't just activate Mutavault and have it gain any of these abilities because you are playing Slivers, or you could just play a combat trick to gain these abilities in Limited. This wording just makes the cycle simple to non-judges.
Aspect of Hydra – G – Instant – C – Target creature gets +X/+X until end of turn, where X is your devotion to green. Not a bad combat trick in Limited, I don't think mono-green has the legs to live in the competitive formats, but I know some elf fans that will love this for casual decks.
Charging Badger – G – Creature – Badger – C – Trample. 1/1. Not bad for Limited as this get better as you stack bestow dorks and pumps on top of it.
Courser of Kruphik – 1GG – Enhcantment Creature – Centaur – R – Play with the top card of your library revealed. You may play the top card of your library if it's a land card. Whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control, you gain 1 life. 2/4. It's not that bad for Standard. Totally want a playset for Maze's End. In Limited the worst thing in the world is drawing into lands, so being able to skip over them is cool. With that 4 toughness means it will live for a while in combat.
Culling Mark – 2G – Sorcery – C - Target creature blocks this turn if able. Nice removal in Limited that allows you to eat utility dorks before they get to work.
Fated Intervention – 2GGG – Instant – R – Put two 3/3 green Centaur enchantment creature tokens onto the battlefield. If it's your turn, scry 2. Honestly this is the best of the cycle. Sure they are all just Limited cards, but this one seems to have the most bang for your mana.
Graverobber Spider – 3G – Creature – Spider – U – Reach. 3B: Graverobber Spider gets +X/+X until end of turn, where X is the number of creature cards in your graveyard. Activate this ability only once each turn. Hmm, I think we are getting some sleep cards for a graveyard deck in Block and Draft. I can't wait until we get the GB god in the last set along with the GB temple.
Hero of Leina Tower – G – Creature – Human Warrior – R – Heroic – Whenever you cast a spell that targets Hero of Leina Tower, you pay pay X. If you do, put X +1/+1 counters on Hero of Leina Tower. 1/1. That's a cool green Heroic creature for Limited. Got extra mana, just make it bigger. Got a feeling that green is going to surprise me in Limited with the good cards that just keep coming.
Hunter's Prowess – 4G – Sorcery – R – Until end of turn, target creature gets +3/+3 and gains trample and “Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, draw that many cards.” It's a powerful effect in Limited. Oh, I so want to cast this in Limited. Dang it this set is making me want to play green in Limited. How did this happen.
Karametra's Favor – 1G – Enchantment – Aura – C – Enchant creature. When Karametra's Favor enters the battlefield, draw a card. Enchanted creature has “Tap: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.” I like how they pushed the two-drop enchantments by giving them card draw to replace themselves. Still green gets lame mana effects in the cycle, but these are a boost to mana fixing in Limited.
Mischief and Mayhem – 4G – Sorcery – U – Up to two target creatures each get +4/+4 until end of turn. Hmm, going to say this is just a slow combat trick for Limited. Still five mana for eight power if you got two dorks it would be cool.
Mortal's Resolve – 1G – Instant – C – Target creature gets +1/+1 and gains indestructible until end of turn. Nice combat trick to keep you dude alive.
Nessian Demolok – 3GG – Creature – Beast – U – Tribute 3 (As this creature enters the battlefield, an opponent of your choice may place three +1/+1 counters on it.) When Nessian Demolok enters the battlefield, if tribute wasn't paid, destroy target noncreature permanent. 3/3. Have I told you how much I love tribute in Limited. Either I get to blow up some non-creature or I get to bash face for six. Granted my favorite tribute creature is the...
Nessian Wilds Ravager – 4GG – Creature – Hydra – R – Tribute 6 (As this enters the battlefield, an opponent of your choice may place six +1/+1 counter on it.) When Nessian Wilds Ravager enters the battlefield, if tribute wasn't paid, you have Nessian Wilds Ravager fight another target creature. 6/6. I'm in love with this creature for Limited. So do I get to eat one of your dorks or do I get a 12/12? The best thing about tribute is that you get to judge if you opponent has removal. If they do, they will pay the tribute but if not the will have to weight the issue of the effect verse giving you a fatty.
Noble Quarry – 2G – Enchantment Creature – Unicorn – U – Bestow 5G. All creatures able to block Noble Quarry or enchanted creature do so. Enchanted creature gets +1/+1. 1/1. Another nice card for Limited. Once you have a ton of fatties in play because of tribute you just cast and alpha strike for the GG.
Nyxborn Wolf – 2G – Enchantment Creature – Wolf – C – Bestow 4G. Enchanted creature gets +3/+1. And the cycle of Nyxborn creatures for Limited flavor is complete.
Peregrination – 3G – Sorcery – U – Seach your library for up to two basic land cards, reveal those cards, and put one onto the battlefield tapped and the other into your hand. Shuffle your library, then scry 1. Not bad mana ramp in Limited. Sets you up for a six-drop splash card the next turn, thins your deck by two lands, and sets up your top deck. That's a lot of work for just four mana.
Pheres-Band Raiders – 5G – Creature – Centaur Warrior – U – Inspired – Whenever Pheres-Band Raiders becomes untapped, you may pay 2G. If you do, put a 3/3 green Centaur enchantment creature token onto the battlefield. 5/5. Why is green so good in Limited. The rest of the Inspired Nyx spawning creatures suck but this is just so good it makes me want to draft mono-green all day. Late game you just keep attacking and making dudes.
Pheres-Band Tromper – 3G – Creature – Centaur Warrior – C – Inspired – Whenever Pheres-Band Tromper becomes untapped, put a +1/+1 counter on it. What is this Draft format coming to when it makes me want to draft mono-green. These basically need to die and in a format with so many jank removal spells this is just nuts.
Raised by Wolves – 3GG – Enchantment – Aura – U – Enchant creature. When Raised by Wolves enters the battlefield, put two 2/2 green Wolf creature tokens onto the battlefield. Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 for each Wolf you control. If you haven't see it watch this video. That's right you came to the wrong neighborhood. Five mana and you get six power broken up over three dorks. That's really awesome in Limited. Could even be a great card in Commander.
Satyr Wayfinder – 1G – Creature – Satyr – C – When Satyr Wayfinder enters the battlefield, reveal the top four cards of your library. You put a land card from among them into your hand. Pu the rest into your graveyard. 1/1. We have reached critical mass for a graveyard deck in Block and Draft. Time to start brewing. Love this because unlike the other graveyard fillers this in fact works with the dead creatures matter cards.
Scourge of Skola Vale – 2G – Creature – Hydra – R – Trample. Scourge of Skola Vale enters the battlefield with two +1/+1 counters on it. Tap, sacrifice another creature: Put a number of +1/+1 counters on Scourge of Skola Vale equal to the sacrificed creature's toughness. 0/0. Well if you are just going to lose the creature to blockers in combat you might as well just feed it to the hydra, but with out vigilance this means you need to keep the hydra back to block to pump it. I think this is just too slow to make it out of Limited.
Setessan Oathsworn – 1GG – Creature – Satyr Warrior – C – Heroic – Whenever you cast a spell that targets Setessan Oathsworn, put two +1/+1 counters on Setessan Oathsworn. 1/1. Another good Heroic creature for green in Limited. Best thing is that this basically short cuts all the ordeals into activating on the turn you enchant them on this dude. Green, why are you so good in Limited, normally you suck some much.
Setessan Starbreaker – 3G – Creature – Human Warrior – C – When Setessan Starbreaker enters the battlefield, you may destroy target Aura. 2/1. Seeing how much Auras have been pushed in this Limited format you will want a few of these even if you are just splashing them in the deck as removal to down grade Bestow Voltrons.
Skyreaping – 1G – Sorcery – U – Skyreaping deals damage to each creature with flying equal to your devotion to green. Nice flying sweeper for Limited, but that's about it.
Snake of the Golden Grove – 4G – Creature – Snake – C- Tribute 3 (As this creature enters the battlefield, an opponent of your choice may place three +1/+1 counters on it.) When Snake of the Golden Grove enters the battlefield, if tribute wasn't paid, you gain 4 life. Would rather this have been draw three cards then put tow back, after all this is the serpent from the garden of Eden they are referencing and that was the fruit of knowledge. Still not bad for Limited, just not awesome.
Swordwise Centaur – GG – Creature -Centaur Warrior – C – 3/2. Nice beater for mono-green in Limited. I would totally enchant this all day in draft.
Unravel the Aether – 1G – Instant – U – Chose target artifact or enchantment. Its owner shuffles it into his or her library. Nice god hate for Limited that might just see Standard, or at least Block, play in sideboards. If the Gods take off in Commander as generals I could see this becoming a staple.
Hate to admit it, but damn green is the toats macgoats in this set. Limited bombs and sweet build utility cards for new decks in Block and Standard. The fact that I so want to draft mono-green is just nuts. Why, why does green have to be so good for Limited. What happen Blue and Black? What just because you guys are slugging it out for King of Standard you just gave up on Limited with this set? Did you have cool stuff but it all got nerfed in development because of you two ruling Standard? Okay enough of my belly aching about this and time to rap up the reviews with multi-colored, artifacts, and lands.
This has been...
