Born of the Gods – Blue cards

Has it really been four months already? Seems like just a few weeks ago I was writing the Theros reviews. Guess it's time to dive into Born of the Gods, the new set that is hitting the shelves on February 1st and making us spend all our money updating our decks. The cards we will be drafting our of pack one from, and making up half our sealed pools, in Limited for the next four months. So let's dive into the new toys as we go card by card look to at their effect on the game.

Aerie Worshippers – 3U – Creature – Human Cleric – U – Inspired – Whenever Aerie Worshipers becomes untapped, you may pay 2U. If you do, put a 2/2 blue Bird enchantment creature token with flying onto the battlefield. 2/4. No, that ability sucks but the token is so sexy. It's the mythical bird of the gods, it gives you the god bird. Still I think that in Limited this might just be good. As you attack with it and hope it lives to make you aerial troops the next turn. With cards that are in the set to build around the Inspired mechanic this just might work in Limited.

Arbiter of the Ideal – 4UU – Creature – Sphinx – R – Flying. Inspired – Whenever Arbiter of the Ideal becomes untapped, reveal the top card of your library. If it's an artifact, creature, or land card, you may put it onto the battlefield with a manifestation counter on it. It's an enchantment in addition to its other types. 4/5. I have to say this is going to find a home in my cube and might be going into a Commander deck at some point. I would even say it might be good enough for Standard at some point. I mean sure it's a late game card but with scry and the ability to cheat some awesome permanents into play is going to make this a fun card even if only for budget decks. Totally a bomb in Limited.

Archetype of Imagination – 4UU – Enchantment Creature – Human Wizard – U – Creatures you control have flying. Creatures your opponents control lose flying and can't have or gain flying. 3/2. Limited bomb, but why the hell does the blue one cost 6 mana when the white one cost only 3 mana. Just too slow for Standard, but when you cast this in Limited you should just win that turn.

Chorus of the Tides – 3U – Creature – Siren – C – Flying. Heroic – Whenever you cast a spell that targets Chorus of the Tides, scry 1. 3/2. Okay, I can see this being playing in Limited to great effect. Scrying when you use a combat trick is cool.

Crypsis – 1U – Instant – C – Target creature you control gains protection from creatures your opponents control until end of turn. Untap it. Got to say that is a powerful combat trick for the Inspired deck and at common you might just see two of these in a Draft. This is going to be cool in Limited.

Deepwater Hypnotist – 1U – Creature – Merfolk Wizard – C – Inspired – Whenever Deepwater Hypnotist becomes untapped, target creature an opponent controls gets -3/-0 until end of turn. 2/1. It's cool for a combat trick that allows you to mess up blockers. Wow, this Inspired mechanic is kind of janky.

Divination – 2U – Sorcery – C – Draw two cards. Nice dig spell for Limited.

Eternity Snare – 5U – Enchantment – Aura – U – Enchant creature. When Eternity Snare enters the battlefield, draw a card. Enchanted creature doesn't untap during its controller's untap step. I forgot how bad blue removal is in Limited. At least this replaces itself.

Evanescent Intellect – U – Enchantment – Aura – C – Enchant creature. Enchanted creature has “1U, tap: Target player puts the top three cards of his or her library into his or her graveyard.” Yeah, it seems like it would be cool because of the Inspired mechanic but this is not the card to build a mill deck around. I really hate the hoops this deck gave for players to jump through to play with all the cool Inspired cards.

Fated Infatuation – UUU – Instant – R - Put a token onto the battlefield that's a copy of target creature you control. If it's your turn, scry 2. See that triple blue mana-cost, that means this isn't going to go in any competitive deck other than Mono-blue. Still Using this to make another Master of Waves or a Nightveil Specter might be cool, but I think that people are going to just skip over this and call it jank.

Flitterstep Eidolon – 1U – Enchantment Creature – Spirit – U – Bestow 5U. Flitterstep Eidolon can't be blocked. Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 and can't be blocked. 1/1. Yeah, jank for the constructed formats but this will see play in Limited as another body to bestow Thassa's Emissary on.

Floodtide Serpent – 4U – Creature – Serpent – C – Floodtide Serpent can't attack unless you return and enchantment you control to is owner's hand. (This cost is paid as attackers are declared.) 4/4. Wow they are really making blue suck in Limited. Just skip this and hope the other blue player has to pick it.

Kraken of the Straits – 5UU – Creature – Kraken – U – Creatures with power less than the number of Islands you control can't block Kraken of the Straits. 6/6. Going to call this one a strait up Commander and Limited card. Only good in a format were things are slow enough that you will have enough islands out to make this unblockalbe.

Meletis Astronomer – 1U – Creature – Human Wizard – U – Heroic – Whenever you cast a spell that targets Meletis Astronomer, look at the top three cards of your library. You may reveal an enchantment card from among them and put it into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in any order. 1/3. It's a cool effect for Limited with all the Nyx creatures. Target this with a combat trick and net another dork for combat.

Mindreaver – UU – Creature – Human Wizard – R – Herioc – Whenver you cast a spell that targets Mindreaver, exile the top three cards of target player's library. UU, sacrifice Mindreaver: Counter target spell with the same name as a card exiled with Mindreaver. 2/1. If only this was a when it deals damage and not a heroic trigger then this would have seen play in Standard as for now it's just

Limited jank that might help there be a mill deck in Draft.

Nullify – UU – Instant – C – Counter target creature or Aura spell. Not bad for Limited with how the format forces you to play bestow this basically ends up being really cool.

Nyxborn Triton – 2U – Enchantment Creature – Merfolk – C – Bestow 4U. Enchanted creature gets +2/+3. 2/3. Speaking of being forced into playing with bestow creatures in Limited.

Oracle's Insight – 3U – Enchantment – Aura – U – Enchant creature. Enchanted creature has “Tap: Scry 1, then draw a card.” So not a fan of this. Best thing you can do is put it on a vigilant dork and hope for the best... or on a defender to us during you opponent end step. In the end it's still just a Limited card.

Perplexing Chimera – 4U – Enchantment Creature – Chimera – R – Whenever an opponent cast a spell, you may exchange control of Perplexing Chimera and that spell. If you do, you may choose new targets for the spell. (If the spell becomes a permanent, you control that permanent.) 3/3. Awesome new Commander card that will be a bomb in Limited. I just love the fact that I get to cast this then use it to counter when my opponent tries to win the game with a bigger spell. Seeing how it's an enchantment I might want this for that Solar Flare whip deck I'm thinking about brewing.

Retraction Helix – U – Instant – C – Until end of turn, target creature gains “Tap: Return target nonland permanent to its owner's hand.” That is the worst Unsummon I have ever seen in my life. Only thing good about it is that it Triggers both Heroic and Inspired. In the end it's another card I would rather set on fire than cast out side of a very dicey Limited game.

Siren of the Fanged Coast – 3UU – Creature – Siren – U – Flying. Tribute 3 (As this creature enters the battlefield, an opponent of your choice may place three +1/+1 counter on it.) When Siren of the Fanged Coast enters the battlefield, if tribute wasn't paid, gain control of target creature. 1/1. Love it for Limited. This makes me want to build a Mind Control deck for Commander. With this kind of effect having been pushed up to rare it's nice to have it back a uncommon once more. Still even if you don't get to steal the creature you will get a 4/4 flying beater.

Sphinx's Disciple – 3UU – Creature – Human Wizard – C – Flying. Inspired – Whenever Sphinx's Disciple becomes untapped, draw a card. 2/2. Would so rather be casting the last creature for five mana. Still when you get to attack in the air and draw extra cards this will make the cut in Limited.

Stratus Walk – 1U – Enchantment – Aura – C – Enchant creature. When Stratus Walk enters the battlefield, draw a card. Enchanted creature has flying. Enchanted creature has flying. Enchanted creature can block only creatures with flying. Loving this in Limited. It replaces itself and jumps your dork over your opponents. Sure this doesn't allow them to block ground troops any more, but I would rather be forcing blocks than blocking.

Sudden Storm – 3U – Instant – C – Tap up to two target creatures. Those creatures don't untap during their controller's untap step. Scry 1. Not bad for Limited to tap down you opponents attackers for two turns and then you can attack. Loving this.

Thassa's Rebuff – 1U – Instant – U – Counter target spell unless its controller pays X, where X is your devotion to blue. The down side to Mana Leak is that in the late game it's easy for your opponent to be able to pay the three mana as they have amassed enough lands. This card has the upside that it can still be useful late game. This might just become the card to break the battle between Mono-blue and Mono-black for the Standard boogie-man.

Tromokratis – 5UU – Legendary Creature – Kraken – R – Tromokratis has hexproof unless it's attacking or blocking. Tromokratis can't be blocked unless all creatures defending player controls block it. 8/8. Limited bomb! Man that is so cool, and super annoying, all at the same time. Still in formats with lots of removal this sucks which makes me want to crack it in Limited. I mean with some pumps this is just GG unless your opponent get all there dorks up to block.

Vortex Elemental – U – Creature – Elemental – U – U: Put Vortex Elemental and each creature blocking or blocked by it on top of their owners' library, then those players shuffle their libraries. 3UU: Target creature blocks Vortex Elemental this turn if able. 0/1. Hate to say it but I think we just might have found another great card for mono-blue in Standard. Master of Waves is a lord for this guy and being able to shuffle an opponents dork back into their deck is a good tempo card. Still it's an awesome card in Limited if this doesn't make the jump to the 60 card decks. Just being able to take your opponents fatty and shuffle it back in is going to be so fun to tick off you opponent.

Whelming Wave – 2UU – Sorcery – R – Return all creatures to their owners' hands except for Krackens, Leviathans, Octopuses, and Serpents. Crap baskets! Mono-blue is now the nuts. This card just kills mono-black by bouncing all those Pack Rat tokens out of the game. Granted this might just be the card that will make you want to Draft blue.

Going to have to say that while the blue cards do seem to mostly just be a bunch of Limited jank, there are a few gems that make me want to draft the color. Granted you need to crack those Limited all-stars in order to want to take the blue cards. Also we have some new tools for Mono-blue in Standard which makes me want to get a brew together. I just wish Mutavault wasn't $30 each so I could play the deck. Well time for me to get looking at the black cards.
