One of the joys in life is to discover a new restaurant where the food has won several awards nationally and internationally. BoomBozz Taphouse and pizzeria has recently opened in Gilbert Town Square, on Gilbert Road and Warner. Originally based out of Kentucky, chef and owner, Tony Palombino, has decided to open a location on the West Coast in our own Valley of the Sun. What does "BoomBozz" mean you ask? We asked too. Apparently, it is Italian slang for "wild, crazy and fun". Sounds like my kind of place already.
Arriving in the afternoon for lunch, we entered the large space, immediately noticing walls of windows that open to the patio and outside areas, and a ton of televisions throughout, which is great for sports watching anytime. As we took our seats in the bar area, we also couldn't help but notice the 25 beers on tap. Looks like Yardhouse might have some competition. Not wanting to get too full on a Sunday afternoon, (afterall, we are ladies out "gallivanting" on a Sunday), we opted to start with a lovely glass of Lucky Star Pinot Noir. It was delicious. Onto the menu!
Needing to start with something right away, we ordered the Stuffed Portebello ($7.49), and oh my goodness, was it amazing. This extra-large mushroom was stuffed with sausage, onion, spinach, bacon, artichokes, black olives, topped with Asiago and Feta cheeses and roma tomatoes. Oh, but wait, then it was drenched in a creamy pesto sauce. Whoa! Even though we were supposed to be watching our waistlines (not!), we finished the whole darn thing.
Next up, the BLT Wedge salad, of course ($6.99). This salad stood about five inches high and was loaded with applewood smoked bacon, egg, tomato and chunky blue cheese dressing. Nothing less than expected.
But the "pièce de résistance" was our pizza. Palombino has won awards for Best International Pizza, Best Gourmet Pizza, Best Vegetarian Pizza, and named one of 50 best pizzas in the country by Food Network Magazine. This is not a pizza you want to miss trying for yourself. With several specialty creations to choose from, we were delighted to learn we could order a "side by side", which is one creation on one half, and another creation on the other half for only $15.99 for a medium. YAY! Highly recommended, and one of our favorites, we went with half BBQ chicken pizza, and half D'Sienna, which is spinach, tomato cream sauce, roma tomatoes and three cheeses. Mmmm, mmm. You can choose from three types of crust, and we went with the thin crust. Hands down, the BBQ chicken was a masterpiece. Those were just two choices of many, which I can't wait to continue exploring - or build your own creation.
Other master gourmet creations on the menu include calzones, sandwiches, soups, and pasta dishes. Also offering a couple dessert choices, we wish we had room to try their One Hot Cookie - a homemade chocolate chip cookie, baked fresh to order, topped with vanilla bean ice cream. Heck yeah! Sign me up for one of those on my next visit.
And let's not forget to mention they have happy hour specials daily, and good ones.
