Belly's trying to grow up, but everyone still sees her as a little kid. She doesn't like that, but at the same time, being a kid has its advantages. She can still stick her tongue out at Jeremiah or Conrad, depending on who's annoying her at the moment. Maybe even at her brother Steven. Then there's Cam Cameron. Cam's pretty cool and you feel bad for both him and Jeremiah at the end, as they both fall for her despite her heart being set on Conrad. The Summer I Turned Pretty is the summer of firsts and the summer of lasts. Belly's had her first kiss, but not with the boy of her dreams. And one revealing fact threatens to make this the last summer at the beach house.
Han does a wonderful job of creating round, colorful characters that make you care. Every teen girl loves romance and to be chased by more than one teen boy at a time. What better settting than the beach? The only flaw with this story is the choice to use flashbacks to push the plot forward. There are too many, making it hard to follow. The story alternates between the past and the present too often to make it coherent. You get the gist of what happens, but combined with minor characters that only make an appearance, the timing disrupts the flow.
Otherwise, stay tuned to what happens next. Will Belly and Conrad last?
