Book Review: The Mark of the Dragonfly by Jaleigh Johnson

The Mark of the Dragonfly by Jaleigh Johnson

The Mark of the Dragonfly by Jaleigh Johnson is an upcoming adventure book set in another world with two rival kingdoms on the brink of war and is about two girls making a journey across the kingdoms on a train in search of where one came from and the other's dreams for her future. This book is written for children, although there is a good amount of danger and fighting that takes place that could make it scary and inappropriate for some young readers.

The main character is Piper, who is an orphan scrapper girl that has a talent for fixing mechanical objects and dreams of escaping the Meteor Fields on the 401 train and living in the capital city of the Dragonfly Territories. Piper’s dream of heading to the capital becomes a reality early on in the book, as she helps a girl with the mark of the dragonfly that she finds injured after a meteor storm, but the journey and her dream coming true proves dangerous and more complicated than she imagined.

Overall The Mark of the Dragonfly is a well-written book with plenty of adventure and unexpected twists. There is also a good romance plot line that slowly develops between the protector of the 401 (Gee) and Piper. Additionally, the world it is set in quite intriguing with the conflict between the kingdoms affecting the lower classes and the magic and tech the main characters possess.
