The novel flashes back to Wrath’s past, some time in the 17th century to illuminate his present conflicted attitude toward having a child with Beth and the threat to his throne. Action and suspense ensue. We gain insight into Wrath’s character. The subplots continue the story of Sola and Assail, and focus more attention on Trez and Selena, and Layla’s strange relationship with Xcor, another flawed, tortured, yet sexy vampire with a name to drive your spell check mad. Xcor clothes shopping is a priceless chapter. As always, the author knows exactly when to lighten the mood. Ward also sets up the groundwork in this novel for the next one, or two or three, as the author of a popular series should, so fans can rest assured the next installment is on its way. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long. Meanwhile, paranormal romance fans may want to check out J.R. Ward’s “Fallen Angels” series, if you aren’t already hooked on that series as well.
