One of the most profound effects of globalisation is that people from everywhere are falling in love with people from everywhere else. There is a world of romance happening out there and it is called the globalisation of love.- Wendy Williams, "The Globalisation of Love
In this day and age, "meeting" and falling head over heels in love with people from different cultures and countries have never been easier. We live in a time when the phrase "citizen of the world" stands for new possibilities — possibilities that many thought would never exist 20 years ago.
In "The Globalisation of Love," Wendy Williams takes a detaled look at the meaning and challenges of inter-cultural (GloLo) relationships. Each chapter deals with a specific topic (parents-in-law, weddings, religion, language, food, etc.) and is peppered with case studies from couples that she interviewed. Williams also shares personal anecdotes based on her own experience as a member of a British-Ukrainian-Canadian family.
There are two things I really like about "The Globalisation of Love": its thoroughness and its conversational tone. The book touches upon every possible issue faced by GloLo couples with wit and humour. Williams can get a laugh out of you on every page, especially with her Top 10 lists.
That said, the writing style is too verbose at times; some sentences were so long I had to read them several times. And Williams' classification of GloLo couples is somewhat confusing. Including more interactivity, perhaps by adding outlines and charts, might make things easier to understand, while creating a good break from the written content.
"The Globalisation of Love" is honest and thought-provoking. In a nutshell, it makes for an enjoyable read.
"The Globalisation of Love" was released on November 13, 2011, and is available for purchase at Amazon.com.
