Sunrise, by Mike Mullin

Sunrise is the grand finale in the Ashfall Trilogy. In this final book of the trilogy Mike Mullin takes us on a journey from simply surviving to thriving and growing despite the odds. Alex and Darla continue to amaze readers as they navigate a world transformed the eruption of the Yellowstone National Park super volcano. Mike Mullin expertly draws the reader into Alex and Darla’s world, a world that morphs from disorder to a new order, one with an entirely new set of rules.

The incredible depth of detail and attention to plot and character written into the story helps bring home a sense of realism that draws you in and holds your attention. The surprises that await readers and the twists of fate the characters encounter make Sunrise a book that is next to impossible to put down. At 516 pages this book is so powerful, the storyline so gripping, that you hardly notice you have been reading until you realize you just finished the book!

Mike Mullin’s Sunrise is a book I will be recommending to all of my students. Expertly woven into the storyline of this fantastic conclusion to the trilogy are the tenants of the martial arts we all train in. Alex, the main character, completes his own personal journey from child to adult, displaying the ideals martial artists strive to live; courage, honor, integrity, respect, courtesy, perseverance, loyalty, and many more. Mr. Mullin once again brings the positive traits of his main characters into sharp relief as they struggle against a world turned upside down.

Mike Mullins has done it again! Sunrise follows in Mr. Mullin’s tradition of great Young Adult writing. It is a seamless continuation and fitting end to the story began in Ashfall, and built upon in Ashen Winter. Sunrise and the entire Ashfall Trilogy are a must read, and not just for “young adults”!
