People always think (especially the girls) that pretty girls have it lucky—that they get all the attention. Well, Chloe Rand could prove you wrong with one sixth grade incident that led to a whole lot of unwanted attention and labeled her a snob for life.
Scary Beautiful is what Chloe’s boyfriend calls her until Sean becomes the ex who moves all the way to the other side of the country before realizing that he wants to be with her. And apparently, when you’re popular by default because of your looks, no one knows what to make of you when you’re unattached.
Your friends think you’re on the prowl for each one of their crushes, suddenly making every one of your moves out to be as another way to snatch up all the good guys. Meanwhile, your crush is a total geek and still thinks pretty girls like you should hang with the popular crowd.
While this story is mostly girls gossiping about boys, Niki Burnham does show us a popular girl who is not typically athletic as well. It’s also really easy to pin a pretty girl as one who has it all and nothing to worry about, but maybe that’s what being scary beautiful is all about—a chance for us mere mortals to see that we shouldn’t be jealous of girls with model-good looks because they’ve got their panties-on-the-girls’-locker-room-wall moments, too.
