Book review: Books for preschoolers (Video)

Penguin Young Readers Group has released new titles for preschoolers.

"Baby Penguins Everywhere!" ($16.99) by Melissa Guion is a book about the need to balance time spent alone and time spent with others. A female penguin is alone and lonely. Suddenly she becomes the mother of many little penguins and has no time left for herself. This is a good book to use when explaining to a child while parents sometimes need time alone.

"The Birds of Bethlehem" ($16.99) is the newest addition to Tomie dePaola's holiday stories. The story of the nativity is told from the perspective of the birds in Bethlehem. One group sees shepherds, another angels and another the man and woman going to the stable. The birds decide to go to the stable and see what is happening.

"Puss in Boots" ($17.99) by Jerry Pinkney retells the Charles Perrault classic story of a poor boy and his cat who helps him become rich. Puss in Boots tricks a sorcerer into turning himself into a mouse. He eats the mouse and his poor owner inherits the sorcerer's estate, becoming a wealthy count. Puss in Boots is named Prime Minister.

"Tea Cakes for Tosh" ($16.99) by Kelly Starling Lyons is a beautiful story about how a grandson bonds with his grandmother. Illustrations are by E.B. Lewis. Tosh loves his Grandma Honey's stories, especially about great-great-great-great-Grandma Ida who was a slave. She was the plantation cook and her special job was to make tea cakes. As Grandma Honey ages she begins to lose her memory, Tosh finds a way to help her remember who she is. She teaches him how to make the tea cakes.

"Flight of the Last Dragon" ($16.99) by Robert Burleigh is about Draco, the dragon constellation of the northern sky. Illustrations are by Mary GrandPre, the illustrator of the "Harry Potter" series.
