The wait is almost over. The Book of Mormon (the Broadway musical) will finally be hitting the Smith Center on the 10th of June, 2014, and tickets are going fast. Since its debut on Broadway in March 2011, it has been breaking the box office with every politically incorrect statement the creators of South Park could come up with. It is a wonder how Las Vegas, Sin City, the go-to place in North America for wrongdoing, has endured the wait for over three years.
Finally in June of 2014, the musical will arrive to shake up the already shaken town. Tickets are going fast for the show that critics have called “blissfully original, irreverent, outspoken and hilarious” (New York Daily News). The Associated Press were not exaggerating when they wrote, “the Book of Mormon manages to offend, provoke laughter, trigger eye-rolling, satirize conventions and warm hearts, all at the same time.”
This musical is certainly not meant for the faint of heart or the conservative spirit. The creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, have easily managed to stir up the public once more with their dark humor approach. At the same time, and on a more serious note, they show the Mormon missionaries’ experiences as they deal with new sites, new emotions, and new questions regarding their faith.
The New York Post described it best: “A full-blooded tuner that rejuvenates musicals while displaying a genuine love for the form. An avalanche of filthy gags, butt jokes and wickedly catchy show tunes. Each time you think they can't possibly top a particularly crazed moment, 10 more follow. By the time The Book of Mormon ends in an orgy of over-the-top cheer, you just can't wait to get on that ride all over again.”
The show will be in Las Vegas from June 10 to July 6, 2014. It will then travel to Salt Lake City, the chosen headquarters of the LDS Church, where it will make a short appearance between July 28 and August 9, 2014.
