Boobs and Gumbas: A Super Mario Burlesque has been running for a few months at Gorilla Tango Theatre and judging from the sold out crowd last night, it will probably be extended again.
Ok, so it's a burlesque show with Mario and Luigi. Who wants to see them naked? Well, they are played very well by 2 attractive girls with big black moustaches. The whole cast is female. There's Bowser, a very sexy Chomper(Hazel Hellbender), Princess Peach, Gumbas, Toad, ghosts, monsters and more.
It's a comedy, lots of jokes and breasts. Mario and Luigi are played by burlesque performers Coo d'Twat and Lily e'Claire respectively. They are super cute and hilarious with Italian accents, playing up gender confused plumbers. Of course, they are forever trying to rescue Sweet Ginger Rose as Princess Peach. She's acted with gusto by Rose and there's even a little dramatic license rewrite twist to the Mario story at the end.
The story loosely follows Super Mario gameplay. There's bullets, fans, tunnels and coins. Luigi's Mansion is put on in an entertaining dance act complete with flashlights in the dark, and stripping ghosts. The ghosts were amazing and hooded so I can't tell you who they were. Another great character is Lacey Lay as a Fish who swims gracefully around most of the show. Diva LaVida created an enthusiastic mushroom and item dealing Toad that was very funny.
The sold out crowd was well served in advance of their arrival, so they were somewhat wild. All of the performers handled them with ease and professionalism incorporating their goofiness into the show.
