The Darcys brought their brand of sixties groovy psychedelic noise pop to be the opening act for Bombay Bicycle Club. There was something sweet and instantly likeable about the group. It could be the endearing way they hug perfect strangers goodbye completely genuinely like they’re old friends.
It could also be the way that they bring interesting friends. In Los Angeles, one of their friends is Eric Johnson, an actor on the hit cop show Rookie Blue. Johnson first encountered the band in Canada where the series shoots. The quartet consists of Jason Couse, Wes Marskell, Mike le Riche, and Dave Hurlow. They are giving away a free download at www. Londoners Bombay Bicycle Club sound, by contrast, an awful lot like the jangle pop groups from the 1980s-90s Bristish Invasion. Guitarist Jamie McColl said they aren’t that way consciously, they just like how they sound. But, their parents list a bunch of bands that they sound like. The older generation sure loved their jangle pop.
Their tunes are catchy with smooth vocals. Their light and energetic performing style and sweet high notes attracted a crowd that looked like their music. The crowd young, bouncy crowd sang along and danced unabashedly.
“I’m really so sorry it took us so long to come over to the West Coast,” said lead singer Steadman before the set’s finale. “I hope it was worth the wait, because it was worth it for us.”
Bombay Bicycle Club’s set was taped for Last Call With Carson Daly and was shown on 2/23/12. It only took 7 years of being a band for them to get a television premiere in the US. They selected the single “Shuffle” which you can enjoy to the left.
Sadly, neither of these bands get much airplay in Los Angeles. But the El Rey was packed with people in the know who appreciated what the bands had to offer. They even knew songs by opening act Lucy Rose who sang a few with her guitar before taking her place as a backup singer with Bombay Bicycle Club.
Here are some photos from the evening in which you will see that Eric Johnson handed out postcards for The Darcys. And all of Bombay Bicycle Club came out to say hello to their fans. They signed autographs on recordings – and even on arms – with entertaining results.
