Bluepoint Brewing Company, Patchogue, Long Island, NY, Oatmeal Stout, 5.2%abv. is pitch black in the glass with and almond colored head the dissipates quickly. Roasted malt hits the nose first with espresso, dark chocolate and slight berry notes like blueberry and raspberry. The roasted malt dominates the palate with espresso following and slight cacao in the background. The mouth feel is medium and smooth, probably due to the addition of oats to the brew kettle. I would like a little more out of this beer, some more body and deeper malt flavors.
I like to call this a starter stout, when you are looking to jump into stouts but want to ease into it. The flavors are nice and the lighter body will help launch you into a fuller bodied stout. Cook up a nice pork stew with this beer and serve it with the beer as well.
