As a mother of six kids donuts are a familiar family favorite. We thought we'd tried everything, but once again, reading the Buzzfeed article "21 Things You Miss After Moving Away from Portland" I had to add #4...You crave Blue Star Donuts, which the Voodoo-lovin’ tourists haven’t found out about just yet to my PDX dining bucket list. Seriously? Better than Voodoo? How do you get more Portland than Voodoo? So on Saturday with rain pouring down my husband and I added a donut adventure to our itinerary to see what it was we were missing.
First and foremost I have to state that I'm a fan of Voodoo Donuts. I've stood in an hour long line to get them. I've brought out of town family and new friends and acquaintance to the line "eyes bulging" at the atmosphere and asking "Seriously? This line is just for donuts?" so my expectations were high for a better than VooDoo experience. Here's what I found. I don't know if it was the rain or the fact that Blue Star Donuts is Portland's best kept (yet all over social media) secret but there was no line outside the door. In fact, as I entered Blue Star Donuts there were maybe 15 people ahead of me waiting their turn at the counter. People were pouring their coffee, awaiting their orders and generally in a state of food bliss while standing at the window counter tops eating their choice of what can only be referred to as nothing less than donut perfection. The options were many and I ended up requesting a dozen of which I chose a variety and was extremely pleased when the cashier mentioned "and with a dozen or more you receive 10% off"!
There wasn't a single donut I disliked and there were several that I will go back to try. My favorite was the blueberry bourbon basil doughnut. It was everything a donut should be. Fresh and flavorful and leaving me wanting more! Have you been to Blue Star Donuts and if so what was your favorite? Leave a comment and let me know! I'd love to hear from you!
