‘Blue Man Group’ brings the entertaining spectacle to Columbus

The stage sensation Blue Man Group has made such an impact on the world that it seems rare to meet someone who has not at least heard of the show.  The signature blue-painted men of the group are recognizable immediately.  However, until you have experienced the spectacle yourself, you cannot fully understand what it’s all about.

The entertainment of Blue Man Group starts from the first second that the audience’s attention is tugged toward the stage—the standard pre-show announcements.  Rather than simply stick to the normal instructions to turn off mobile devices, the announcements themselves went to a hilarious level, encouraging audience participation at every turn.  This perfectly set up how the show itself would work.

I came into Blue Man Group knowing little to nothing about what would happen.  I knew that there were going to be blue men on stage, and that there would be paint involved, but that was pretty much it.  The show is so much more than that, however.  It’s a series of skits, mixing together comedy, art, and music (especially percussive music) into perfect harmony.  There were pop culture jokes, tons of physical comedy, and incredibly catchy and exciting songs that I had stuck in my head for hours after.

The first few rows of the audience are reserved for those who don’t mind getting dirty—each chair in the “splash zone” comes equipped with a poncho.  While there wasn’t a ton of paint or mess making its way into the audience, there was enough to need this zone.  Not to mention the “splash zone” was frequently the part of the audience picked on by the cast.  It would definitely be an interesting experience to sit in that area.

Outside of the music and hilarity, be prepared for plenty of audience interaction.  You’ll be asked to stand up and dance along.  You’ll be asked to say things in unison.  And if you’re one of the lucky ones, you’ll be chosen to go up on stage to participate in one of the bits.  You can’t ever fully guess what’s going to come next!

I highly recommend this show if you’re looking to have a great time and laugh until you cry.  Blue Man Group is unbelievably entertaining and definitely worth seeing.
