Ever in search of those films that prove he is definitely in charge of his own odd little odyssey, Phoenix infuses Spike Jonze’s “HER” with a wonderful mixture of power and pitiful that only he could deliver. And while the film is a lesson in the human spirit’s ability to overcome all obstacles when it comes to matters of the heart, be they looks, limits, or low power bars; still, it’s also an unsettling illustration into how technology has both improved and stunted our lives.

What do I know though, Theodore could have it all figured out. At least he would never have to face the double-edged bite of, “Hey, do you think my ASCII looks Fat32 in this slipcase?” You have to hand it to Jonze though, he’s managed to unite two groups of film fans that largely never meet on the same plain…geeks and girls.

The disc’s extra menu is almost as Arthouse alluring as the film itself, with Lance Bangs bringing his art-doc feel to both main draws, those being “The Untitled Rick Howard Project” and “HER: Love in The Modern Age.” The Howard “project” as it were takes the old behind-the-scenes standard and turns it thankfully on its ear, giving what could have been just a modest stroll through Jonze’s set an atmosphere of documentary decadence. You won’t find much in the way of scene breakdowns or in-depth plot examinations, but life on the set is front and center.

The Modern Age segment, though not as long, does hit the high points of what the “project” was missing, with cast and crew breaking down their own interpretations of life and love in the, well, modern age. The third and final feature on the menu breezes by at only four minutes, and is simply a summary collection of scenes from the film intermingled with behind-the-scenes footage and set to the music of a Theodore and Samantha conversation.

So if the opposite sex isn't providing much chemistry, and you’re open to looking at your iPod differently, then "HER" may just be your megabyte matchmaker.
