Studio Synopsis: Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (Clooney) in command. But on a seemingly routine mission, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalski completely alone—tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the darkness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.

Equally pairing top tier technology with top talent in their field; a successful combination reminiscent of the space program itself, Gravity securely stands on the shoulders of its pioneering predecessors to build an unsettling, yet spectacularly updated space odyssey for the modern age.

And while Gravity’s pull comes not from the typical mission accomplished angle, but rather from the tucked away nightmarish spaces that inhabit every space walker, it’s black, cold impact is matched absolutely by Clooney and Bullock’s arresting performances. Few films are able to truly navigate the orbits of both dramatic and action landscapes with equal degrees of success, but as this film most eloquently displays, Gravity changes everything.

If the superb starkness of the film weren't enough, the filmmakers have thankfully packed the extras menu with amazing worthwhile features. The two standouts being the hour-plus long Mission Control behind the scenes documentary which delves headlong into nine of the most crucial aspects and phases of the film, and paired with that, a technically savvy half-hour sequence of Shot Breakdowns. Both features compliment the other completely and both are given the same amazing clarity and attention to detail as the feature film.

Additional supplements include co-writer Jonás Cuarón's short film Aningaaq, which adds just a touch more back-story to Bullock’s Dr. Stone arc, and an informative Collision Point documentary narrated by Ed Harris about the impending dangers of space debris. A Silent Space Version of the film was originally promised as well, but seems to be regrettably absent. The feature boasted the ability to view the film the way Cuarón originally intended to release it, with no sound at all. That idea however was – as Cuarón explains further in the Complete Silence segment of the Mission Control supplement – eventually altered because it was believed that it would ultimately alienate the audience too severely.

So with action and drama tumbling end over end, and a visual space splendor few films can transcend, Gravity takes a solo look at one skywalker’s fight to survive.
