Blu-ray/DVD Combo review: Real Steel

Synopsis ~ Balancing gritty action and emotional heart, “Real Steel” is an inspiring and visually stunning film that takes audiences on an action-packed journey. Washed-up boxer Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) scrapes by as a small-time robot-fight promoter as he tries to make a comeback. Against all odds he eventually succeeds—at least in the eyes of his son Max (Dakota Goyo). “Real Steel” is spectacular family entertainment that will have everyone cheering again and again.

What ultimately allows Real Steel to TKO its rusted-out ridiculous premise and largely derivative draw is the dually light-hearted and sentimental attachments afforded to the big lugged buckets of bolts, smelted with equal parts Short Circuit, Rocky and a slight nod to The Champ, and welded together with the all around charms of a still on point Jackman and wide-eyed Goyo.
And while this familiar bout brings few unique jabs and a focus that clearly pits man against machine, the unabashed avarice of the film’s rock’em-sock’em style and round by round poundings is; still, more than enough to fill up the boxing fan bleachers.
A generous assortment of extras all make their way to the ring, with perhaps the most intriguing and best segments being the shortest. The feature “Building The Bots” punches in at a little over five minutes, but may be one of the best and most worthwhile supplements on the entire disc, especially for anyone who enjoys all things robotic. And the feature “Sugar Ray Leonard: Cornerman’s Champ” – which weighs in at a little over six minutes – should also be a major draw as the boxing legend lends two helping hands to both the film production in general and; more specifically, to Hugh Jackman’s training.
Other supplements include the always welcome Blooper Reel, a mock-umentary speculating on the upcoming “Atom vs. Zeus” fight, a few Deleted/Extended scenes, a look at the anatomy and creation of Atom, and including Disney’s pioneering “Second Screen” feature. Which although at the time of this review was not yet available, but includes enhancements that when initiated will allow viewers to interact with the film from their Tablets or Computers.
So with sub-plot slights but incredibly entertaining fights, Real Steel walks away with a split-decision for those seeking substance, but bags the belt for rough and riveting action.
